Grotto is an intimate Italian restaurant beyond the State House down Bowdoin street on the "other" side of Beacon Hill. The food is not only excellent but as well as beyond ordinary in what is offered. It's necessary to have reservations, as this is a...More

Walking down a short flight of steps you enter an underground womb-like space, such a cozy world and welcome respite from the bitter Boston winter night. We settled into a delightful little corner of the restaurant built under the steps and lit by candles, a...More

A nice intimate space; friendly efficient staff. The food is good, though not great. But for the prices it's an excellent dining option in Boston. Ate on a snowy Thursday evening. Enjoyed the candlelight. We split everything but the 3 course/4 course options are good...More

This place is great, this is a small intimate location. Important to note the tables are close together and it can get noisy with everyone talking. BUT most importantly the food is delicious and great wine selection. The service was top notch, will definitely visit...More

Terrific service, totally charming atmosphere! Overall, the food was excellent. Stick with the pasta dishes though. The folks in our party that ordered that were the happiest. It is a very small restaurant so make sure you make reservations.

Getting desperate to find a restaurant we decided to try this little hole in the ground. WOW what a great find. Excellent food and service. Small and poor view but that did not matter to our stomach.

We went because we were staying close by. We are going back because the food, the service and the ambience are exceptional. Do not miss this jewel in Boston’s crown.

Probably the tiniest sit down restaurant I’ve ever been to. Really if you are a big person you will have a hard time navigating between the tables. But its ambiance was both romantic and cozy and the food was well done. Staff were very friendly....More

It is a couple of miles. I would take the Green Line on the T from one of the hospital stops to Boylston. It is a short walk from there.

Some on street parking is available in evenings and weekend....and there are a number of garages around that are reasonable for evening rates (i.e. $13.00 after 6pm).

DECADENT CUISINE. SUBTERRANEAN SETTING. Occupying an inconspicuous, subterranean spot on the back side of Beacon Hill, Grotto has earned itself high praise with imaginative, contemporary Italian cuisine. The dining room's exposed brick walls covered with artwork from local creative-types give Grotto an intimate and cozy feel that's hard to find anywhere nearby.
