Al's State Street Cafe gets it right with traditional, hearty, old-school deli style sandwiches. Immensely popular with several locations. Buy one hero and share with a friend; it's more than enough. Food is fresh and tasty. No frills, counter dining. If you like atmosphere, order to go.

We go to Al's every one in a while when is nice out to get great hot subs. Meatball & Chicken Paris are fantastic and the bag lunch is a great deal!!! Favorite of the locals for sure.

To be honest, I haven't tried many of their sandwiches, maybe three different ones. That's because I always crave the South Street, a cold sandwich with basil, mozzarella cheese, balsamic vinagre and prosciutto. Never fails. I often buy the large one and share, half of it is more than enough for a meal. The times I've bought a different one... More

Al's makes fantastic sandwiches in the style of "subs" (submarine sandwiches) I grew up on from a Boston area Italian grocery store. This place is one block from Fanieul Hall and two from the Aquarium making it a reasonably priced place to pick up a sandwich. Large enough to share. It is pretty much a take out place but there's... This place offers a variety of great subs. From Hot to Cold Subs. I definitely recommend the Italian Sub. Great flavor

This place is fun. It's a little whole in the wall sandwich shop, that gives ginormous portions. I ordered the small Steak Pizzaiola, which was delicious, and had a hard time finishing it because it was so big. The guys working there are fun, so if you need a quick meal, I recommend this place.

We went in to Al's on State street. We ordered 2 small subs. Roast beef was excellent and tasted like roast beef should. (NOT LIKE CHAIN SANDWICH SHOPS) My husband had a turkey sub and loved it. My small sandwich was pretty big and the larges are humungus!! We will definitely go back tomorrow and have another before we leave... More

I really liked their sandwiches. We hiked across town because we heard they were so good. Purchased two tasty sandwiches and then boarded a ferry for Fort Warren. We ate the sandwiches at Fort Warren with an amazing view of the harbor. The sandwiches rate an A+ in my book and I don't grade on the curve.

After going to Al's every other place we went out for lunch on our trip seemed like bad value. $9 will get you a 16" sub full of delicious filling. Would highly recommend to anyone visiting Boston.

We walked here for lunch based on a recommendation from our trolley driver. Ordering experience looked a little daunting at first, but we got in the groove. The sandwich was very large and we could have easily split it. With a price of $8.50 for a sandwich chips and a drink we did not feel we needed to. We were... More

Staying in Downtown

Neighbourhood Profile
Downtown
The largest area of the city, Downtown is rich with historical and iconic sites in Boston. Stroll through one of Boston’s most famous green spaces, the Boston Public Gardens, check out and make way for duckling statues, picnic under a beautiful tree overlooking the pond, and walk over the iconic footbridge where, during summer time, you will catch a swan boat toting children and eager tourists through the pond. Have your camera ready to capture its peaceful beauty in the middle of a bustling city. Continue on through the Gardens and take in some open green space at the Boston Common, where you can spend time throwing a frisbee, sitting on a park bench, or, in the winter time, skating on the frog pond. Head north from the end of the Common to see the golden dome of the State House, and travel through government center to Quincy Market and Faneuil Hall, both a historic and popular destination worth a quick visit for a first time to Boston. Head to Long Wharf to visit the Aquarium, or catch a boat to Charlestown or even Cape Cod.
