Dropped in by chance and very pleased we did. Brendan behind the bar is an absolute gentleman and made us a feel very welcome.Food appeared very quickly and cannot fault it.When you get sick of burgers and want some fresh well cooked food come here. Needless to say we all went home well fed and happy.

Great pint of Guinness and good fish and chips. The waitress was friendly and efficient. The prices were very reasonable. There was a quiz show on the TV in the bar (Jeopardy?) and all, and I mean all, the customers at the bar like to take part! If you want a quiet meal do not go when the quiz show... More

We went here during our San Francisco visit. Sat on the bar and ordered just beer, no food (had it before somewhere else). Service was very attentive and nice. Is a good place as a foreign to experience an authentic evening in the city. After we ordered the check we got offered additional peanuts and after paying (with some extra... More

After a disappointment in trying to find good Irish coffee on a cold day, we headed for Kells. We had been here once before and had some great potato skins so hoped the coffee would be just as good. We were not disappointed. Kells seems to be a great place to eat and a very nice place to get a... More

When you walk into an Irish restaurant with a menu you expect Shepard's pie (they have it), or other Irish fare (they have it). What I didn't expect were tri-tip beef sliders and mash potatoes, Bangers (sausage) and mash yes but not beef sliders. I though live on the edge, so I ordered a Dewars whiskey and the sliders. The... My husband I like to find good food when we travel. Well who doesn't. We prefer non chain little hole in the wall places. But hey when your craving corned beef in San Fran where else but Kells. The corned beef was really good and we liked the atmosphere too. Thumbs up for Kells!!

I have often ate in Irish bars in the US when looking for good fayre at a good price, didn't get that here - the standard of food was well above that level. My potato skins and burger were excellent...but J's chowder and pork dish (off the specials) were of an even higher standard. Overall - very good.

We literally stumbled on this Irish pub while wandering around trying to find some eats after leaving the wharf area. A cozy little establishment tucked away near Chinatown and the financial district, it had an old world Irish charm. We arrived early enough for dinner so it wasn't crowded and our service was prompt. We had the shepherd's pie and... More

we went in here twice. It's in a convenient spot if you're heading back into the city centre after visiting the piers. We liked that the food was tasty and portions were manageable unlike so many places in the US.

Staying in North Beach / Telegraph Hill

Neighbourhood Profile
North Beach / Telegraph Hill
The aroma of freshly roasted coffee beans, the sounds of opera, and the sights of the romantic Italian ristorante come together to create the charming neighbourhood of North Beach, once the stomping grounds for the Beatnik Generation. Although parts of North Beach are known for nightlife that’s not always suitable for younger visitors, few neighbourhoods in the city exude as much European charm and style. Peruse a bookstore for the literature of Kerouac, Ferlinghetti and Ginsberg, grab some gelato and head to Washington Square for a perfect afternoon of people watching. Just east of North Beach, the hills and staircases of Telegraph Hill are a unique delight. At its peak, the art deco Coit Tower provides sweeping panoramic views of the bay and city. The beautifully landscaped Filbert Street Steps, a street too steep for a roadway, rewards those willing to hike uphill. Keep your ears open and you might even hear the squawk of the wild parrots who call this neighbourhood home.
