We were staying at the Holiday Inn near The Grubstake, so it was very convenient. It's located in a boxcar, which was neat. The restaurant was a little dark and dingy, to me! The waitress/server/bartender was really nice, although she was coughing without covering her mouth (I notice things like that, because I work in food service and I'm a... More

Stopped in for a late dinner as were staying at a hotel around the corner and didn't feel like driving or walking too far. This is a small, quirky little spot on a busy street. Three is our group had breakfast (served all day), and while nothing too special, everything was served fresh and hot. I had the philly cheese... More

Arrived in SFO on a very late flight and found this place was open till 4 am. Good menu selections, with awesome burgers, sandwiches and the NY steak nicely grilled. I chose to get the vegetables and grilled potatoes which were very good. At that late hour, it seemed populated with locals enjoying a late dinner or snack after a... More

I stumbled on The Grubstake the first night of my trip to San Francisco. I had lost track of time wandering around Fisherman's Wharf and realized it was getting late and I was hungry. After a quick Google search for local late night dining, I decided on this spot due to its quirky setup in an old train car and... More

Visited the grubstake during a visit to San Francisco after finding it on google maps. The food is amazing, cooked to order and delivered fresh as can be! We shared the mozzarella sticks with a homemade marinara and each had a burger, both of which were great, we also shared sweet potato fries. A great range of beers and a... More

Been out partying? Danced yourself to starvation? Need to make that awesome night out with the hot chick last a little longer? Grab some grub at the Grubstake. Open until 4am! Great food, great service and they have beer! If you don't try it because it doesn't "look cool" you're missing out!

This is a lovely atmospheric restaurant and bar housed in an old railway carriage. Friendly staff and cosy atmosphere. Wide range of bottled beer and a traditional menu also with a Portuguese twist. Loved the roast chicken, burgers, salmon and ny steak.

This small place is an old railway dinning car over 100 years old with a bar made from a sunken ship in the Bay. The food is good and there is a hugh range of bottled beer, although no draft beer. The service was excellent from our friendly waiter James and loved the quirky décor which added to the atmosphere.

Grubsteak is a strange place. Its décor belies the quality of its food which is excellent. It only has one steak option which tasted excellent and is highly recommended. (For me) another excellent recommendation is its selection of craft beers not to mention its ice crème sundries. In summary- a good very reasonably priced meal.

Staying in Nob Hill

Neighbourhood Profile
Nob Hill
Swanky and stylish, Nob Hill sits in the heart of the city and is home to amazing architecture and views. The hike to the top can be a challenging workout for those who forego a cable car ride, but they will be rewarded with some of the city’s most beautiful architecture adorning its peak. Originally populated with mansions after the Gold Rush, most if not all were devastated in the 1906 earthquake and fire that followed. Luckily all is not lost; storied hotels and Grace Cathedral surround Huntington Park. Having a drink or dinner while taking in the sunset and views at the "top of the Mark" is tough to beat.
