Over priced and lousy. The pizza was not good, the cheese ravioli was lousy but the caprese salad was good. It is located in a strip club area and is old and tired. The waiter wasn't very friendly either! All in all I think you could do much better somewhere and save yourself $140 like we spent.....although that included a... More

My wife and I had a pizza here. We ordered an Italian sliced sausage and mushroom. What a treat! Definitely "Old World" style and baked in a wood-fired oven to boot. I tried pizza from four different restaurants and this place had the best - Hands Down! A must eatery. Great service too.

They seated our group of 10 down the center of their smallish room. Authentic Italian wines, fare, and spumoni. Friendly and boisterous atmosphere. Great time. Everyone in our group loved it.

One of my old friends and I have weekly dinners together and instead of our usual place, she told me about Tommaso's and how her grandparents used to come here when they were in their 20s! I had to check this place out, and let me tell you, it didn't disappoint. Food was delectable (highly recommend their veal roll, lasagna,... More

While visiting San Francisco, I asked some locals where to get good Italian food. They suggested Tommaso's.I decided to try it .This place didn't look like much of of a restaurant from the outside. I went in and was warmly greeted, and sat at a table.I ordered a drink and then dinner. The food was old style Italian, and very good.The... More

Italian atmosphere, large (very) portions, busy and noisy atmosphere. But the food is average, at best. Disappointing as our local friends recommended Tommaso's. Perhaps the fashionable hype is better than the reality. Better places are out there.

Cool atmosphere but very basic Italian food. No frills and nothing super awesome. We got the lasagna which was the highlight and veal picante. We sent the veal back. It was very tough and overly tart. We ordered chicken parm and it was just okay. The service was good though. They took care of us. Probably not a go-to next... More

While walking around Fisherman's Wharf, we stumbled upon Tommaso's Restauant. Though small and somewhat cramped we enjoyed true Italian service. Our waiter was from Rome and was very helpful. Had a crab cake dinner, (no not Italian cuisine), but delicious non the less with ceased salad, a crab cake dinner and a bottle of wine. Would eat there again.

Whenever I am in North BeachSan Francisco, I feel lucky if I can eat at Tommaso's. Other restaurants are bigger, better known and more crowded. And that's fine with me, that way I can have a seat at the best! No reservations to contend with, strictly first come, first served. No worries, the wait is well worth the delicious food... More

Named after a Chinese cook, this fabulous eatery tucked in a small sub level space on Kearney Street may still serve the best all round Italian meals in the city. The generous servings of spinach salad with a light lemon vinaigrette to a special baked coo-coo (clams) in a yummy broth is a great way to start. Pizzas and veal,... More

Staying in North Beach / Telegraph Hill

Neighbourhood Profile
North Beach / Telegraph Hill
The aroma of freshly roasted coffee beans, the sounds of opera, and the sights of the romantic Italian ristorante come together to create the charming neighbourhood of North Beach, once the stomping grounds for the Beatnik Generation. Although parts of North Beach are known for nightlife that’s not always suitable for younger visitors, few neighbourhoods in the city exude as much European charm and style. Peruse a bookstore for the literature of Kerouac, Ferlinghetti and Ginsberg, grab some gelato and head to Washington Square for a perfect afternoon of people watching. Just east of North Beach, the hills and staircases of Telegraph Hill are a unique delight. At its peak, the art deco Coit Tower provides sweeping panoramic views of the bay and city. The beautifully landscaped Filbert Street Steps, a street too steep for a roadway, rewards those willing to hike uphill. Keep your ears open and you might even hear the squawk of the wild parrots who call this neighbourhood home.
