We ordered our latte and cappuccino (and pizza) from the steamed-milk maestro at Caffe Trieste. Since 1956, the Trieste has attracted poets, artists, and wannabe writers for a heady mix of java, animated conversation, and free spontaneous belcanto-opera from patrons every Saturday. Today, the lady next to us sang happy birthday to another patron in Italian while her little dog... More

Good coffee drinks, pastry, pizza slice. Grumpy service. Internet slow. Floors we're dirty. Bathrooms dirty.

I had a great cup of coffee at Caffe Triste. The service was good, the cafe has a great, local atmosphere and you can sit outside on a sunny day.

Caffe Trieste is more or less on Grant Street near the thoroughfare of Columbus Avenue. I stopped by here for coffee and a quick breakfast on the way to a business meeting. It's basically counter service. There are about 20 cafe style tables and when I was there there were about 5-10 other, mostly older patrons. The coffee (I had cappuccino)... More

We absolutely enjoyed hanging out in this cafe whilst exploring the North Beach area. The coffee was delicious and the juke box is a nice add on. Great spot for just relaxing and watching the world go by.

This place is a locals cafe. Cash only. Good stop after or before City Light Books. We've only ever had lattes etc but I think they have food and beer too.

We had really expected something special but--and maybe it was because we went at 7 p.m. on a Saturday night--the pastries were all old, dry, and almost stale....Cute restaurant but nothing special. And they don't take credit cards!

I've only been here once and I wish I could come back! This is a must go! My sister got a hit chocolate and she said it was the best she ever had. It was made of real chocolate and handmade real whipped cream! I got two pastries that were delicious. It I don't know the name of them because... More

Staying in North Beach / Telegraph Hill

Neighbourhood Profile
North Beach / Telegraph Hill
The aroma of freshly roasted coffee beans, the sounds of opera, and the sights of the romantic Italian ristorante come together to create the charming neighbourhood of North Beach, once the stomping grounds for the Beatnik Generation. Although parts of North Beach are known for nightlife that’s not always suitable for younger visitors, few neighbourhoods in the city exude as much European charm and style. Peruse a bookstore for the literature of Kerouac, Ferlinghetti and Ginsberg, grab some gelato and head to Washington Square for a perfect afternoon of people watching. Just east of North Beach, the hills and staircases of Telegraph Hill are a unique delight. At its peak, the art deco Coit Tower provides sweeping panoramic views of the bay and city. The beautifully landscaped Filbert Street Steps, a street too steep for a roadway, rewards those willing to hike uphill. Keep your ears open and you might even hear the squawk of the wild parrots who call this neighbourhood home.
