We were headed to the Ballet on a Sunday afternoon, and had some time to spare. My husband was getting hungry so we stopped here for a snack and a drink. We didnt' have much time, so didn't order much food, plus my husband is gluten allergic and there wasn't much for him to have. We found some safe and... More

I am a sazerac lover. We stumbled on the Boxing Room quite by accident. It is a great bar that includes a seafood bar as well. Very competent bartenders, and very friendly. We got there a bit ahead of the after-work rush, so we were able to enjoy a relaxed environment and full attention from the bartenders. And if you... More

The food was pretty good, the atmosphere was pretty good, not too loud, not too crowded. It seems like it's a popular place before shows as it was quite packed when I initially passed by, but once 7:30 came around, it emptied out. I'd recommend making reservations if you're going to be there prior to 7pm. The beer selection isn't... More

A good place prior to a show, or for happy hour, the food and service are pretty good. Portions large enough to share - the gumbo for example comes in 2 sizes and even the small portion for $10 will be sharable for 2 (and they will split it into 2 blows). Very good collard greens. BBQ shrimp for $20... More

We eat out a lot, we get tired of the usual fare, and we love New Orleans food and go there every chance we get, so the Boxing Room was a great choice on a recent Friday night. The room could be described as industrial modern, but with a high ceiling the noise level was tolerable despite a crowded bar... More

We went in there just for HH beers but started to browse the menu. The menu is small and wasn't tempting at the first glimpse. But everything we had snacking our way through was delicious. Service was friendly and attentive. There were complimentary homemade pitachips with paprika creme as dip, very yummy. The grilled oysters and crispy Boudin Balls very... More

Had the Pimms Cup, which is a speciality here. Excellent. Gin and Tonic and Lemon Drops were also good. A complimentary flatbread and pimento cheese thing was tasty. Hushpuppies were good. Fried chicken ($26) was great and a generous serving with delicious mashed potatoes and collard greens, daughter was happy. (although a bit overcooked). Gumbo and Etouffee were delicious but... Sought out this place as we looked for different types of food to experience in SF. Figured there would be nothing quite like New Orleans style food in San Francisco. It is a lively neighborhood joint in Hayes Valley with a lot of neighborhood patrons and some opera goers as well. The drink menu is perhaps the most interesting with... More

We stumbled on this Hayes Valley joint while walking the neighborhood near our hotel and decided to give it a try. Very lively atmosphere, filled with laughter and congenial chatter. We opted for the Liberty Farms Crispy Duck Confit which was spectacular. Having visited NO many times in the past, this dish held its own. The Trinity is fun to... More

The people are nice but the food is just awful. I sent the crawfish etouffee back it was just watery and tasteless, in fact the only taste was of the canned tomatoes. They use the same base sauce or broth for many dishes clearly, everything was kind of the same. The fried food has such a thick coating of bread... More

Staying in Hayes Valley

Neighbourhood Profile
Hayes Valley
Chock full of designer boutiques, art galleries, funky shoe stores, and great restaurants, it’s hard to imagine Hayes Valley once languished in the shadow of a major freeway. Its removal allowed for the creation of an attractive boulevard on Octavia Street with a community park at its center and dozens of trendy businesses to satisfy visitors looking for a stylish respite.
