There are plenty of drinking establishments to choose from in San Francisco, but this is one where the staff actually takes time to ask how you are doing and welcomes you in. It has its waves of being busy - you could walk in and it be empty, you could walk by it because it looks packed ... no matter... More

This is a little known secret in San Francisco. This little bar is well known by the locals but not very well known by the out of towners. Great priced drinks and a great bartering staff. They will take great care of you.

We stopped in Tony Nik's for a drink while waiting for our food from Tony's pizza. Once ready I ran next door, picked up the pizza then came back. Please keep in mind, this bar does not serve food. I did not take the pizza out of the box, simply opened the box to show my friend, at that point... More

After a great date night out in the city, dinner, bar hopping, etc. we we stumbled upon this great little bar. From the minute we went in we were greeted by a very friendly bartender and got spaces at the bar. They had fantastic looking hand-crafted beverages and great wines by the glass. The locals crowd wasn't rude or pretentious... More

Great little Cocktail Lounge. We stopped in while waiting for a table at Tony's Pizza. I had a $9 Espiritu and it was delicious. Strong but good

Tony Nic’s Café is a bar with a misleading name located in the old Italian neighborhood of North Beach. The host of Café DeLucchi located across the street recommended it to me for before-dinner drinks. It’s has been operating since the early 1930s and retains the look and ambiance from that era. Walk in and you’ll think that you stepped... More

Staying in North Beach / Telegraph Hill

Neighbourhood Profile
North Beach / Telegraph Hill
The aroma of freshly roasted coffee beans, the sounds of opera, and the sights of the romantic Italian ristorante come together to create the charming neighbourhood of North Beach, once the stomping grounds for the Beatnik Generation. Although parts of North Beach are known for nightlife that’s not always suitable for younger visitors, few neighbourhoods in the city exude as much European charm and style. Peruse a bookstore for the literature of Kerouac, Ferlinghetti and Ginsberg, grab some gelato and head to Washington Square for a perfect afternoon of people watching. Just east of North Beach, the hills and staircases of Telegraph Hill are a unique delight. At its peak, the art deco Coit Tower provides sweeping panoramic views of the bay and city. The beautifully landscaped Filbert Street Steps, a street too steep for a roadway, rewards those willing to hike uphill. Keep your ears open and you might even hear the squawk of the wild parrots who call this neighbourhood home.
