We toured the whole island this week and landed at the HBC. We didn’t have reservations but barely got in. Make reservations!!!
Excellent food. Kind staff. The food was terrific! Beautiful presentations. Fantastic
Hilo Bay Cafe was recommended by the folks at the hotel we were staying at, so we decided to give them a try. We went for dinner and were seated right by the bar with peek-a-boo views of the water (though I did go out...to the veranda and look around). It is right on the bay and has great views. I had the crab cake salad, which were some of the best crab cakes I have ever had. (And the sauce that tops them, I could eat with a spoon.) My husband had the Blue Bay Burger; he loved the burger, but did not realize that gorgonzola is a type of blue cheese. Being from Wisconsin, if he had been given any other cheese options (which there were), it would have put it over the top. Other than that, our waitress was great, the food was great, and the restaurant is in a beautiful spot. Would definitely come here again.More
We were here in Aug 2020, so they were limited in the menu and number of tables. It was a good experience, try the fries with truffel mayo....delicious. Also great was the parmesan custard. Both are excellent and the latter a new experience for us....The venue was ok, muted but still pleasant. The view over the bay was very nice. Worth the time, maybe just not a good choice for local cuisine.More
I was in the mood for fresh fish and a green salad and wanted to eat in my hotel room. I walked here from my hotel and the service was incredible. They were very helpful in customizing my order for my needs. Then I was...allowed to wait on a bench with an incredible view of the ocean. A Very classy place in Hilo. Fish and salad were fresh and delicious.More
We wished that we had reservations because when we arrived, we learned that it would be 45 minutes. We came back and I'm glad that we did. We had very good service and yummy popcorn is served when you are seated that has a hint...of coconut and spicy. Two of us ordered hamburgers medium and mine was overcooked (no pink) and my friend's was cooked medium (with pink). The fries were the best! My husband ordered the chicken sandwich with apple and bacon. He had a hard time eating it all together so had to eat the apple separately.More
We had spent the day hiking at Volcanoes National Park and returned to Hilo ravenous. We arrived for the HBC Afternoon Menu (in between lunch and dinner). We ordered a California Twist Sushi roll with tempura-style soft-shell crab as an appetizer, and two orders of...fish and chips. The fish of the day was swordfish and surprisingly, the fish N chips were moist. Along with the Cock N Bull Ginger Beer, the tab came to $64.93 including tax for the two of us.
Good thing we arrived before the start of the dinner hour because there was already a line of people waiting to be seated for dinner. Highly recommended.More
We were looking for a nice restaurant and saw this one on Yelp and we tried and had a great night.
The atmosphere was good. It is always full, so better if you book a table if you don't want to wait. We wanted to...be sited inside so we didn't have to wait much, around 10 min.
The waitress help us with the menu and we ordered Edamame, hand cut fries (the portion was huge), and 3 different rolls californian twist rool, kilauea and makai.
Although it isn't the best place were I have tried sushi, the food was great. Our favorite roll was the kilauea roll. The fries were fresh and hand cut and the dip was nice. Also the edamame were different, chilled with garlic and sesame and the combination was great, not the conventional stuff.More

This is the first time I've received an email from Trip Adviser. I'm told that a customer has a question, but I'm not quite sure what is the question, except maybe the customer is wondering whether or not Hilo Bay Cafe serves breakfast. The answer to that question is no-- we serve lunch, dinner, and in between. If they are wondering are there rats in management at Hilo Bay Cafe, then the answer to that question is also no. We are very nice people, working very hard, trying to provide great quality, innovative food at value prices. No rats. None at all.
