This place sells bbq as their main thing but the catfish is amazing!!! The bbq is ok but nothing spectacular. You can't go wrong with the catfish bites or catfish fillets. The baked beans are really good too.
Piggy Went a-Smokin' is the official name of this small roadside grill and fruit store, but locally most folks I know just call it the "Apple House." It is excellent by either name. It is located almost exactly at the 48-mile marker on US 23...North.
Their BBQ meal is also excellent, but my 91-yr-old mother loves catfish, and we had told her that this place had the largest and best servings of any place we knew. We finally were able to take her there, and she now agrees, even though she has the entire Louisville, KY area to compare it to.
It's just a small fruit store, like a barn, with a restaurant on one side. You order at the window and they call your number when it is ready. They have a few tables setting outside under a roof. Family dining, easy style.
They also sell seasonal fruit, nuts, veggies and candy from the shop next to the restaurant. When we were there they were unloading several crates of apples, fresh from the orchard.More
I have eaten here several times and was never let down. The catfish is perfectly cooked, not greasy, and lightly breaded. The BBQ pork is fabulous. The smokey flavor and the BBQ sauce compliment each other. I consider their food some of the best in...the area.More
The pork BBQ was great! Not greasy, and the sauce was on the side so you could have as much or as little as possible. The catfish was great, and the chicken salad good, too. The little store was pretty cool, too.
Piggy Went A Smokin' and Catfish is located on US 23 in rural western Virginia. Don't be fooled by the rustic Appalachian setting. The staff are hospitable and efficient. What the facilities lack in looks and furnishings are more than made up by their good,...inexpensive food. Their specialty, Fried Catfish, is excellent with its crispy breading and served piping hot. The pulled pork and baked beans are also very good. Drinks are limited to cans and bottles of soda, water, and iced tea.
The food is served in Styrofoam takeout containers. And seating is limited to half a dozen outdoor tables. Highway traffic noise is a distraction. But, the overall excellent quality of the food and friendly service make this a stop well worth it. They also cater.
Stop in the next time your passing through, enjoy the scenic view, and have a quick bite of good local home cooking.More
