The persistent rain that soaked us to the bone also proved a blessing in scattering the evening crowd that would normally frequent Chowning's Tavern. Much like 18th-century travelers exposed to the elements, we (me, wife, 2 boys) were thankful to step in to the warm and inviting tavern and have no trouble getting a table. We were treated to well-prepared... More

"Fast food" primarily in a historic setting with better service- hamburger, stew, fried chicken. Drinks are good and dinner is served to a bit of live music. Good way to end a day in an easy way.

Probably the best food and value in Colonial Williamsburg, and a wonderful atmosphere. At night, there are musicians playing period songs, and the service is great. It's not fine dining, but the food is outstanding. More relaxed and informal than some of the other taverns, and small groups are usually asked if they will sit at tables with others to... More

We have been to Williamsburg several times and have overlooked Chowning's each time but we wont overlook it again. The food was good, not great, not horrible. I am raving about everything else. The atmosphere is excellent. It was a chilly November night and there was a bonfire in front of the tavern for us to keep warm. There was... More

We ate here for lunch on a Monday during December. The atmosphere is the high point of the place, with period clothing and possibly a musician to accompany your meal. We ate here after eating at another spot in Colonial Williamsburg the day before, and we were not impressed. It was louder, our waitress was rather rude, and the food... More

We were in Williamsburg for the Grand Illuminations on December 4th. Reservations were made at this tavern several months ago, and there was not a problem with us being seated on time. However, after having several meals at a few of the taverns in Williamsburg in the past, this was the very first time that we experienced a poor meal.... More

We had a wonderful Thanksgiving Dinner at Josiah Chowning's Tavern. It was so warm and welcoming. There was music and the ambience was everything we hoped for.

We are somewhat frequent visitors to Colonial Williamsburg, and go to Chowning's each trip. We love Gambols, their entertainment/snacking/dining by candlelight. Depending on when you go, you will hear strolling musicians, see magic tricks, hear a storyteller, or learn how to play an 18th century game. Food choices are mostly snacks, although you can get a limited number of entrees.... More

We had a great time at Chowning's! We went the night before grand illumination, so we had to wait for a table for about 20 minutes. It was close to 10pm. They seated us at a common table with another older couple. At first we weren't pleased about that, but the couple was very friendly and the atmosphere was so... More

Whenever we visit Williamsburg, we we go to Chownings. We ordered the trio of soups and enjoyed them. We had the Turkey Trencher and enjoyed that, as well. Since it was lunch, we shared everything. We will be back.
