We enjoyed our evening here thoroughly. We got a ploughman's lunch and a pint, sat back and enjoyed the ambient fiddler. A "person of the past" was teaching young girls to curtesy, but it was a male person of the past and it was hilarious to see him fussing with his imaginary skirts. A fun evening and satisfying supper!

We always eat in the taverns when visiting Colonial Williamsburg. Chownings never disappoints, from the beef stew to the Welsh Rarebit! if you have never tried it...give it a whirl!

The food at Chowning's is delicious and the service is great. I love the hot cider and beef trenches, but I think the best thing is the shepherds pie! The only issue with Chowning's is the wait. It is small and does not accept reservations, so stop by early, they open at 11, and put your name on the list...they'll... More

We love to have a beer and some lunch here (homemade chips are wonderful). They have a great spot outback where we sit at the bar and just relax and enjoy the atmosphere. It is not uncommon to have local folk stop by and share a story or two.

We visited Chowing's in the beginning of October, when it is still about 70 -75 degrees, and were on a campus tour. We knew the food would be good, and had a variety of different items on the lunch menu, to fit myself and two teenagers. I had the garden salad, which was light and refreshing, my children had sandwiches... More

The meal was nothing special compared to some other establishments in the Williamsburg area, but the atmosphere makes it worth a trip! The Tavern workers are so fun and kind, they wrote poems for us and made us the center of attention!

On our recent visit, this was the only tavern open in Williamsburg historic area. I thought it would be overpriced and mediocre quality food. I was wrong. It was great food, reasonably priced and served in a lovely ambience that was a wonderful homage to American history. I highly recommend a visit here.

We loved the atmosphere and commadiere that the wait staff created. The service was good even with the tavern full. We enjoyed Shepherd's Pie and Brunswick Stew. Very generous portions. Salad was typical. Wine and beer reasonable with great selection. The troubadour was good. Being that we were in a Colonial Williamsburg tavern, prices were okay.

Authentic atmosphere, delicious food, excellent beers on tap, and even delightful 18th century entertainment. All the taverns in Colonial Williamsburg are good, but Chownings is my favorite. Expect to wait. No reservations!
