After a splendid visit to the Zuiderzeemuseum in Enkhuizen we decided on our way home to stop in the charming town of Edam for a nice stroll and maybe a late lunch. The "L'Auberge Damhotel" seemed to be just the spot, lunch possible till 6...pm and a 4 point rating on TA. It was not busy in the restaurant, one table occupied and minutes after us a party of 4 persons stepped into the restaurant. Plenty of room and three waiters visible on duty. When we entered the restaurant one of the waiters welcomed us (good) and promised to bring the lunch menu to our table. We never saw this waiter again, except in the middle distance. After a while another waiter approached our table and queried if we wanted something to drink. We repeated our wish for lunch and lo and behold, within a minute we had two copies of the lunch menu on our table. We selected our order and put the closed menu books on our table, being sure that one of the three waiters would notice that we were ready to order. It was not busy, remember. But the service had in a short while descended in a complete meltdown. What was the case? During our perusal of the menu the hot chocolate dispenser at the bar seemed to have developed some ailment. In the well known Dutch way, one of the waiters was assessing the ailment and his two colleagues 'helped' him by standing around and looking. The customers were completely disregarded; the sick dispenser had a magic fascination for the staff of three. Not one of the three found it necessary to attend to the customers. When this tableau stayed stationery for about fifteen minutes we lost patience and left. See photo. A one point rating.More
