Ordered Cheese & Bacon fries which were soggy and did not have any bacon on them. The rest of lunch was no better. "Homecooked" is a joke. The mashed potatoes are from a box and the gravy is from a packet. The green beans were...More

Good food, friendly people, sit a spell. New owners, enjoy the old time-y Restaurant in the county seat of Monterey, Virginia.

We head over to Monterey regularly from our home in the Shenandoah Valley. It's a great, steep and windy drive through beautiful mountains. We usually stop at High's for lunch (we've had breakfast there, too). It is always a pleasant stop. Simple, tasty, plentiful, and...More

It was approaching nightfall when we got into Monterey, Virginia. Thankfully, Highs restaurant was still open. Apparently, they close a little early on Sundays. The food was quite good for the price. The owner was very pleasant and I think he needs a little help...More

We stopped for lunch on our way through this charming little town on Rt 250 near the WV border. The place was quiet at about 2 PM on a weekday, and this was no surprise. The server was pleasant and helpful. The restaurant was clean,...More

I took my family on a spur of the moment trip to Monterey, Virginia. For us this is a trip of only about an hour, but the area is magnificently beautiful. We stopped in for lunch around 1:30 on Veterans Day and thoroughly enjoyed it....More

Thai Friday at Highs and it’s awesome! Local Thai woman cooks every Friday. We had chicken fried rice, shrimp & noodles and chicken curry! And only $8.70 Great meal every time we stop!

Lovely atmosphere took me back to my childhood. Decent prices but the quality of the food and the presentation was quite disappointing. Only two places in town for breakfast and the other place was a pub. Come to see the old volcano mount and the...More

They passed the iced tea test immediately (real, fresh, brewed tea). We both ordered the turkey club, and it was the best club I've had in years. The turkey was thick-sliced real breast meat, the tomatoes came from someone's garden, and the toast was perfectly...More

New owners have spruced up the place and serve real food - and the best food in an otherwise dismal dining town. Many D.C. residents spend a weekend here and can't find info - won't know the place finally has edible food. Please check out their mountain trout - homemade desserts and breads, fresher food than this town has seen in years!
