This restaurant experience is one I hope to repeat. The atmosphere is true vintage. I had the small chicken fried steak and it was cooked to perfection. Only get the large if you have a huge appetite. The fries are cut from fresh potatoes. The iced tea was very good and that is important to me. They have many homemade... More

Went for dinner this past Saturday and it had been a couple of years since visiting. We shared the 24 oz porterhouse steak that was cooked to perfection. We reserved a baked potato earlier in the day and my wife had french fries (which were fresh cut). The salad was OK. Service was was very attentive. I have had the... More

It is well worth searching out in downtown Ponder. It hasn't changed in 40 years - it was great then, it is great now.

After reading about this place in several publications, we decided to try it for lunch after finishing up some business in nearby Krum, We both decided to have the chicken fried steak - I had fries my wife had mashed 'taters. The CFS were delicious - my wife rates as the top in Texas while I still prefer Mary's Café... More

Cute place, service was fine. Fried green tomatoes were good. Rolls were cold and ... just strange. Not good. Steaks were terrible. Ordered cooked medium, and they both came out over well done. No seasonings on the steaks at all. They're not grilled, I'm not sure how they cook the steaks. I took 2 bites, tasted horrible. Not edible. My... More

Metooboohoo, Thank you for the great review, glad you enjoyed your visit. One clarification, Ranchman's has always been Ranchman's, the customers gave it the name Ponder Steakhouse and in 1982 a restaurant opened next to the old bank with the name Ponder Steakhouse to steal our thunder. The Ponder Steakhouse closed around 1988 and I was able to secure the... More

My friend and I were passing through Ponder on our way to Decatur and this was one of the only options to eat. I'm a vegetarian so I'm not a big fan of steakhouses, but I'm so glad we stopped here. There were plenty of options for me, although I was not the biggest fan of the French fries. They... More

Melissa, Thank you for the great review. We do get vegetarians and people with food allergies all the time and we accommodate them to the best of our ability. We don't use frozen French fries which are easy to get crispy because they are precooked, we use the old fashioned cut em and cookem #1 Idaho potatoes, the best we... More

Dinner here was supposed to be the highlight of our girl's TX weekend but we were extremely disappointed in the food. The rib eye's were thin, tough and tasteless. We ordered horseradish sauce to try and liven them up without much success. Our dog enjoyed the generous leftovers since the steaks weren't worth eating. The baked potatoes were excellent and... Last time I was here was in the mid-sixties when I was a student at the University of North Texas. A UNT ex bought the place from the original owners and is honoring its history. I had the lunch special: ham steak with veggie sides. My husband had the Bones special: ground steak with grilled onions and gravy. Giant glasses... More

A Texas Steakhouse and Diner since 1948, with everything from scratch: Pies, Rolls, Salad Dressings and we cut our own (never Frozen) aged beef steaks from primal cuts and grind our choice beef for the juicy hamburgers. Slow down for a taste of what food used to taste like before the chain stores made it all the same. We are BYOB if you care for an adult beverage, we have wine glasses and bottle openers, coolers are welcome or we can put your beer in a bucket on ice. The setting is informal, but if you come in all dressed up, we'll know you must of had a good reason not to be comfortable. Get the city in your rear view mirror and come to Ponder where you can still see the stars at night.
