We eat at Gristmill several times a year when we want to enjoy eating while breathing in fresh air and watching the river go by. This trip, however, may have been our last. One of our regular orders is the chicken fried steak. For about 10 years we have been ordering it. Over time, we have noticed that it is... More

Lovely ambiance in an outdoor setting overlooking the river--well at least what you can see through the trees. Some seating overlooks a parking lot through the trees. Picnic table decor. Food was plentiful and yummy. Ribs fall off the fork, although they could use a little more sauce. The lunch price was $14.99, very reasonable. Our waiter was knowledgeable and... More

We ended up here by recommendation and were not disappointed. This is a massive place. They take your name and once your table is ready write your name up on a massive chalkboard. Hundreds and hundreds of tables in this restaurant housed in an original mill. We lucked out with a table overlooking the river. Despite the size and being... More

Housed in a former gristmill the restaurant seems never to end with multiple rooms with floors of ancient wood, most overlooking the river that provided the horsepower for the mill. Our lunch was excellent from an interesting menu. Don't miss it if you are in Gruene, Texas.

When the weather is nice we sit on the patio. The food is fresh and delicious. A nice place to lunch or dinner at.

The food is fine, the service is good, but the atmosphere is what makes the Gristmill such a great place to visit. Love the rustic setting, and if you are lucky enough to get a table on the river, it's a special treat.

We had lunch and enjoyed it so much, we went back for dinner! The restaurant itself is very cool, lots of different outside spaces with views of the river. For lunch I had BBQ ribs with mashed potatoes and a salad. The salad was fresh and crisp. The ribs were cooked to perfection - very tender, but still on the... More

Gruene, How fun and entertaining. Walking around and explore the shops and buildings. We ordered the catfish and so tasty, great choice. The ribeye steak was good too. Sides of gruene beans and potato salad where great choices. Staff was attentive and very friendly. Great meal and experience.

My family and I have always visited Gruene during the summer. The Gristmill is a stop we make when we have a new couple or new friends coming along. I will always advise to try it once. The food is good, the service is good, and even the atmosphere it fun. But to us, its not a MUST stop place.... More

Sitting outdoors on a beautiful Sunday afternoon was a delight! So was the food. Portions were large, the food was excellent and so was the atmosphere.

Description
Situated on a bluff overlooking the Guadalupe River, this spectacular
restaurant nestled under the shade of towering oak trees has been the perfect getaway for a unique casual dining experience for thirty years.

Located in the historic district of Gruene just beneath the famous
Gruene water tower, we opened in 1977, serving steaks and
hamburgers from a tiny kitchen in the corner of the building.
Our menu still features thick steaks and large hamburgers, but the
restaurant also serves up popular South Texas fare like chicken fried
steak, fried catfish, grilled chicken, enormous sandwiches, fresh fish
and special dishes like tomatillo chicken and bronzed catfish. Fudge
pie, the enormous strawberry shortcake and our signature Jack
Daniel's Pecan Pie are famous desserts. A full bar with a good wine
list and fresh squeezed lime margaritas are also big hits.
