About
Family run restaurant established in 1988 by Pat and Sylvia Keown. Three generations of the family now work in the business!!! We specialize in the freshest local ingredients with an emphasis on fish in the summer and meats including game in the winter. Have won numerous awards over the years for food, wine and service and value. Great selection of drinks too including a vast array of wines, local beers and spirits. Wonderful monastic style atmosphere with dark woods and materials and there’s even monks chanting in the toilets!!! Booking is advisable particularly on weekends.

I ordered a takeaway for my family and we loved it. Had fish and chips, wings, ravioli and risotto. We would 100% recommend!

With Covid restrictions in place we decided to get a takeaway from our favorite local eatery. It didn’t disappoint!!! Great chicken wings, beef bourguignon that melted in the mouth and fish n chips that would feed an army!!!! Really enjoyed and already looking forward to...another one 😀😀More

Have eaten here more times than I can count . The food is always amazing! Steak is the best, I’ve yet to find better and on a Sunday the roast beef is out of this world . This restaurant is perfect for any occasion, birthdays..., family meals or cosy couples night out . Highly recommend it .More

On 21/9/20 I contacted The Hungry Monk and requested a table for four at 7:30pm on 28/9/20. My booking was accepted by the Restaurant. Our party of four were on a two day break at Druids Glen Resort and Spa, a trip we take almost...every year and routinely our trip involves a visit to The Hungry Monk, a restaurant where we have had great meals in the past. On 28/9/20 we got a taxi from the Hotel to The Hungry Monk(20-25 Euro each way), on arrival we discovered that it was closed. My wife made contact with the Restaurant via Messenger, we were told that our booking had not been put in the book and the 28/9/20 was the start of their Winter closing nights, Julian provided us with his “sincerest apologies” and the names of approx 4 other eating locations within the local area, we tried the closest of these only to be told they were fully booked, we returned to the hotel by taxi(another 25 euro journey). This is a totally unsatisfactory service by The Hungry Monk and an exceptionally poor method of managing the situation. Julian apologised but made no offer of trying to accommodate us on another night (We could have visited the following night as it was a 2 night break), Julian would have established this fact had he spent a short period of time adequately dealing with customers that he or another member of staff had let down so badly. This is evidence of very poor customer service by The Hungry Monk, I have all the communication within this debacle that proves my point. I did return to Greystones on 29/9/20 and we had a meal in another Restaurant, it was fabulous and had very attentive staff, shame on you Hungry Monk!!!! Looks like my annual trip will have a new eating location, perhaps The Hungry Monk only show attentive customer care if your a celeb or well known as illustrated within their social media posts, as I’m not a sports star or pop star then who cares???More

Hi Undetectable It is with great disappointment and sorrow that I read your recent review of our restaurant. I note on a positive that you’ve had some great meals in the past with us 😀It’s a great pity that you didn’t feel those experiences with...More

I almost didn't go to this restaurant upon reading reviews of non-compliance with Covid regulations. I'm glad I took the chance and didn't miss the opportunity to dine in such a wonderfully atmospheric place. Every staff member I saw were wearing masks, my details were...taken for contact tracing and the tables were definitely 2 metres apart. I felt very safe so not sure what other reviewers are talking about. Anyway I only had the fish 'n' chips but it was delicious. All staff members I encountered were friendly, service was efficient but the atmosphere and decor of this only lit by candlelight restaurant is something to behold. Will definitely be recommending.More

This is definitely our favourite place to eat in Greystones. Over 35 years on the go which is no mean feat in the restaurant business. It is consistently good especially the steaks and lobster, just divine!!! Good to see them taking the Covid procedures seriously...too with social distancing very evident. Look forward to a return visit.More

The food was absolutely delicious, but unfortunately would not return as all they seem to be doing in terms of Covid precautions is having a bottle of hand sanitizer on the table and having disposable menus. None of the staff were wearing masks or visors,...no contact tracing and a table seated in the restaurant of a group larger than 6 people. I will be supporting the businesses that are compliant in protecting their customers and their staff and I felt there was a serious lack of this during our visit!More

Staff where very friendly and food was great. Would recommend for the food and service. Issue I have is that nobody asked for our name or number upon entering nor did they ask the table beside us. When leaving my wife said to one staff...member at the reception area that they didn't take our names or numbers. She said,oh thats fine I think yous will be ok!!! My wife said no and gave our name and number. Bit disappointing with the situation the country is in and considering the lovely food and welcome shown. Would recommend for food but obviously Covid contact tracing needs hugh improvement.More

My wife and I had a lovely dinner in this Restaurant tonight. From the moment we arrived we had a very good feeling about it. Julian met us and showed us to our table. He went through the menu and the day specials with us...before his colleague took our order. We had garlic Mushrooms for starter. I had the HAKE and my wife had Beef for main course. We both had Crunchie Cheesecake afterwards. The food was 5 star as well as the service, ambiance, Covid -19 precautions. It was a wonderful experience. Well done to Julian and all the team and keep up your great service especially during these tough times. We will be back.More
