Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

This was our first time going to Kanpai of Tokyo. We had a very nice time with the gentleman that put on the show for us and meet some very nice people. The food was delicious including their ginger and yum yum sauce. We both...enjoyed a delicious meal of fried rice, vegetables, scallops and shrimp and a small salad and soup. The scallops and the shrimp were jumbo size and just delectable. I highly recommend going and enjoying your evening with them.More

Do not eat at this place. They switched management & advertised they were staying open after saying for months they was closing. They went up on their prices tremendously. The sushi bar where they just being you your plate already cooked & it’s half the...amount of food is now the same amount as the hibachi grill in the center of the restaurant where the chef entertains & cooks in front of you. There is no sushi specials anymore. The restaurant is still run down. The staff is new & had no answers to any questions. Plus they quit taking the vip cards for frequent visitors after 20 years. They should have just closed.More

Food ok, building needs work. CDC signs everywhere about social protocols... no staff on the sushi side were wearing a mask.

This place was great about 5-10 years ago. But the building needs to be updated. The chief does not put on a show, now he just cooks the food. You are charge for fried rice and if you don’t ask for mushrooms you will not...get any. On top of that you are charged 18% no matter how many is in your group. (There were only two of us) We will not be going back.More

Met family for an early dinner. Haven't been in some time and it's as awesome as always! The staff was amazing and of course the cooks were beyond entertaining. The food is always more than you can eat in one sitting and we all took...leftovers in boxes. If you've never been make a reservation for lunch or dinner soon!More

The main course and the salad was delicious. The soup wasn't up to scratch in my opinion. Our cook was awesome and he put on a great show. Lunch hours are less expensive.

Our chef was very good and performed several tricks for the kids. The food was great. I have been several times and it is a better deal on Sunday's at lunch. Evening meal is a little pricy

We ate here on Friday, the 12th, and the food was good, the staff was polite and the overall experience was good. However, when we got our bill we found issues that others should know about. We both ordered 'shrimp/scallops' and the listed price was...$18.95 each which seemed fair. When the check came we paid it but later noticed that we were both charged $2.45 each for 'FRIED'. ?? This was listed under each of the main course items 'Shrimp/Scallops'. There was an automatic 18% tip added which is fine. We always tip 15-20%. However, we were stumped as to the extra charge for 'FRIED'. 'Fried Rice' is always included and everything is openly fried on the large skillet so that extra charge is confusing. I could have called and asked but it was rather late when we saw this. Does anybody know about this extra charge ?More

The seniors from our church visited this restaurant. Staff was polite, friendly and eager to serve you. Our drink order was delivered very quickly and accurate. The cook was eager to serve us with more food than we could consume. The food was good. Almost...everyone had a carry-out box.More

Great place to eat foods always on point but seems to have issues with table sizes. I've eaten here around 10+ times this year and I've noticed that if you are sat at a full table you get a far smaller portion of everything but...meat. The rice being my favorite part of the whole meal, this kinda sucks. Ate here a week ago at a table with four people and had a large serving of rice that left me enough for two other meals. Today, had more meat than I did rice. They seem to use the same size bowl no matter the amount of people at the table. Just seems odd. Overall great time come for dinner if you want a more impressive show. Lunch seems to focus on getting your food and less on giving entertainment.More

A restaurant that is designed for large parties should do better. We were a party of 11, with a reservation and they were able to seat us on time, which was great. Server was overwhelmed so we went to the bar to order drinks. NO...cold sake at all (multiple offerings on the menu). Only 2 vodkas to choose from so I chose Gray Goose and asked for a double in a tall glass. As I watched the bartender pour, she only poured a single shot in a tall glass...then charged my husband for a double after I had walked away. When we ordered dinner, I ordered scallops...they have none. (We were there @ 6pm). The server was clearly told I am Gluten-Free, she even wrote it on the ticket. The cook came out and proceeded to start the “show” which he had NO showmanship for our table. I reminded him I was Gluten Free. He smiled and proceeded to cook ALL the rice in soy sauce (non-gluten-Free) I asked him again about the sauce being GF. He didn’t even acknowledge me. Spoke to server about it. She explained it to him. Again, nothing done. I grabbed the manager. He offered to cook my meal in the back kitchen. I didn’t get my food until everyone @ our table was almost finished eating. My portions were more like scraps of meat and had NO seasoning since they don’t have ANY GF soy sauce in the entire restaurant. Yuk! Then we were charged for 2 orders of fried rice that I did not get and my husband didn’t want. Again, my entire party was up and ready to leave and we still didn’t have our check to pay. And yes, after all that, they still charged me for my full meal. I won’t go back.More

For years we have enjoyed Kanpai of Tokyo here in Spartanburg. We have been all around the country and the world...some close, none better. We found Kanpai to be equal or above the best Tepanyaki restaurants in North America!

Kanpai of Tokyo was the very first Japanese restaurant I ever ate at. This was many many years ago. But at that time it was a great place to experience Japanese hibachi. Food was delicious, show was great, and service was outstanding. Unfortunately Kanpai of...Tokyo has not kept up with the times. Took my family there recently and even though it was not crowded still had to wait about 45 minutes to get a table. Once there they only had 2 wait staff for the entire restaurant. So it took forever to take our order, and then took forever for our cook to come out. It seems there was only one cook for the entire restaurant as well. So after about another 45 minute wait we finally had our cook show up. To his credit he tried to do the best he could as far as the show. The food was okay but not outstanding. It has definitely gone downhill from previous years. Also, our server tried to do his best but he just could not keep up with all the tables he was trying to service. Obviously this was a poor management issue. It makes me sad, but I think this is my last visit to Kanpai of Tokyo. There are just too many other good Japanese restaurants around.More
