Did not visit the restaurant but was surprised with a birthday cake delivery! This cake is very unique and delicious. If you can't make it to Pittsburgh this is the next best thing. So wonderful!

This place was recommended to us by a friend because we couldn't get out to Oakmont bakery bc of the marathon road closures downtown. It was a tiny place and everything looked good but there was not a large selection. I tried an almond torte cup, which is what they are famous for....they didn't have slices available on Sunday morning... More

Management response:

Hi Katie, we are indeed a small bakery, limited by our space. There has been a bakery in constant operation in that building since the 1880's, when it was built. On the weekends, especially during an event weekend, our stock can get low due to increased foot traffic. I would urge you to come back again, and have the cashier... More

In town from Virginia visiting my son and his family. We happened upon this place using TripAdvisor for somewhere to pick up a snack. What a treat. Very small with no room to sit and eat but for what they're serving, it's worth walking around to eat. We got several cupcakes and an almond toffee torte. It was incredibly good.... More

Almond Torte has always been one of my favorite desserts. I did not know that this is where the burnt almond torte originated until I went there. The cake was light and delicious and I will definitely go there again when I am craving more.

One of the top 3 bakeries in Pittsburgh. They are known for their Burnt Almond Torte. It is not a restaurant but a stand alone bakery.

From their famous burnt almond torte to specialty treats like the hermit, Prantl's offers a great selection of above average treats and breads. The torte might bring you in but do not miss the opportunity to try something else. You will be happy you did.

Great selection of donuts, cakes and pastries and a reasonable price. Parking is iffy, but this is Shadyside. Worth it.

This is the go to place for the famed local Burnt Almond Torte. However, our favorites over the years have been their sourdough bread & Hallah, both excellent.

Prantl's Bakery is a Pittsburgh institution. Its "Burnt Almond Torte" and 100+ sinful sweets have been a tradition for the last 40 years. In fact, there's been a bakery in continuous operation at the flagship Shadyside store for over 100 years. Prantl's is a bakery in the German tradition, with old-fashioned fruit Danish and nut-filled coffeecakes, but we can't help but get excited about some of our "new favorites" as well, like key lime pie and our buttery croissants. In addition to our mouth watering special order cakes, we are famous for our "Burnt Almond Torte", which was conceived by Henry Prantl after a trip to California. There was an almond glut the year he went and the Almond Board was trying to get bakers to use almonds in new and inspiring ways. Henry picked up a few ideas and brought them back to Pittsburgh where he refined them into our current recipe for "Burnt Almond Torte", a unique and addictive dessert. If you've never had one, you really do have to try one. If you have had one, you know what we're talking about! Henry and Jane Prantl retired from the business in 2007. The bakery is now owned and operated by John M. Felice, who strives to maintain the tradition of high quality baked goods. We hope you agree . .
