Does what it says it does: straightforward decent pub food. Not fancy, not gastronomy, but a good menu with good ingredients (locally sourced where possible), cooked well and served with efficiency and a smile. Good VFM too. Arrived midweek early evening without booking. One of us had steak-and-ale pie (local meat, home-made pastry, super gravy, excellent veg) the other Whitby... More

I think it under new management. The food was excellent and great beer and wine selection I had the fillet steak, cooked perfectly at rare and my hubby had fish and chips. Lovely bottle of Pinot Noir and bill under £80

We recently went for a evening meal for two without the kids! We both had the fillet steak with chips & blue cheese sauce £22 each ! We're not big spenders but it was worth every penny if not more Highly recommended/ there's not loads of tables so book ahead

6 adults, mid week, busy place for mid week. Delightful young gentleman looked after us, only 2 on the bar so were a bit over stretched by the number of tables they were serving. We shared lovely fresh breads and oils to start which came with pickled veg, very nice. All ordered different main courses but arrived all together. The... More

We happened upon this pub while we were in the area. Lovely feel to the interior, really good selection of beers on tap and in bottles. We had Sunday lunch in a relaxed atmosphere. The 3 courses were extremely good - excellent for the price (they could easily charge more!). We'd come again and would recommend this pub to anyone.... More

This is the best pub in the village and provides consistently high standards of food and a great choice of drinks. Staff are friendly and we really enjoy our Sunday lunch here.

It and the buildings opposite are grey granite and forbidding but the inside is welcoming. It's not swanky nor ramshackle, almost shabby chic. The buildings opposite are civic and one can feel the past when the thriving town tradesmen and officials used the pub. There are no Ferrari or Audi A8 parked outside. The food is not haute cuisine but... More

We were a party of 7 on a Friday evening. You really need to book most days to be certain. With it being a Friday and pretty full we'd a little wait for the meals. Starters were all good. Soup, cold meats platter and asparagus with poached egg (a little over cooked). Mains, burgers, ale pies, beef bourguignon. Onion rings... More
