Amazing food! We were recommended to go here by a local and if we weren't given specific directions we would have missed it. In the basement of a nondescript building, quite small, maybe seats 26. Attention to detail is spot on. We did tastings of several courses and were blown away with the flavors in each bite.

On January 26th 2017 I visited the place for the first time I was excited and had high expectations. However it was a let down and a large one at that. I had ordered the ochazuke a traditional Japanese dish meant to be served with the expected meat rice and veggies with HOT tea or stock. The tea was extremely... More

Biwa has split into Biwa and a bar called Parasol and with that the menu in Biwa had a big reduction in options. In the past, this was one of my top 5 places in Portland but the new menu, I won't be back. So sad.

This is not the same Biwa. Now it's called Biwa Izakaya, at a different location and completely new menu. Gone are ramen, burger and Izakaya skewers and now it's all fancy, small, expensive stuff. Really annoying trend in Portland. Not.likely to go back.

Loved this place lots of yummy unexpected small plates. Our waitress was fantastic, explained the whole menu and what to expect. Also very yummy cocktails.

I came here for a dinner with a friend. The sashimi plate was very unique and interesting, but I felt it was not worth the price. The rest of the menu felt pretty average. Ramen was decent though.

We had dinner at the Biwa restaurant on SE 9th Street in Portland. It was a warm summer evening and we were lucky to be able to sit outside. The different dishes we ordered to share were awesome and very tasty. Everything we tasted was extraordinary, to the eye and to the palate. We were overwhelmed by the quality of... More

My husband and I had a delicious dinner at BIWA when we were in Portland. A friend recommended we go there and we are so glad we did. We arrived early enough (6:00 PM on a Sunday evening) so we could get seated. We liked the tapas approach to Asian food -- gave us a chance to try a nice... More

It’s hard to choose from the multitude of enticing dishes on the menu at Biwa. The super fresh Seared Oregon Albacore Tuna with Daikon and Ginger was exceptional. The Chicken Breast Yakitori screamed umami and was grilled to perfection. And the voluminous bowl of Ramen Shoyu Style was extremely satisfying. Biwa also offers an Omakase (chef’s choice) menu.

Great, complimentary tasting food. Portions are a little on the small side, though. You need to arrive right when it opens because it fills up fast. Not a ton of atmosphere- so great eats but not so romantic.
