Let me start by saying that two years ago on Valentine's Day my wife and I had the best vegan meal we have eaten anywhere in the world (and we have eaten at some of the best vegan restaurants in the US and Europe). Two...More

We went to Departure with our neighbors, who have lived in southeast Asia and are somewhat expert when it comes to Asian food. They declared Departure as one of the best restaurants in Portland and felt the food was very authentic. As non-experts, my husband...More

I was looking forward to this because of watching Top Chef.... but it left a lot to be desired. It is pretty spendy, which I don't mind if quality is there. I had a cocktail that was the most expensive on the list, I can...More

This is one of my husband’s and my favorite date-night restaurants. The views of the city are amazing. The food and drinks are flavorful and creative. We eat off the vegan menu, and it is amazing.

The space is fabulous. You feel as though you're walking into a spaceship or maybe a 1970s movie set. There are great views of the city and the vibe is positive. The crowd skews young. I had bibimbap and it was very good, but not...More

I agree with a few of the other reviews, Departure is sort of oddly pretentious. We had reservations for four at 7:45PM and had to wait 35 minutes. There was no mention of an apology. There was no offer to get us a drink or...More

My friend and I visited the Departure and had a great time! Super cool vibe, great views of downtown, knowledgeable staff and delicious food! We tried the vegan root & vegetable roll, Mongolian beef, and the kimchi hot-pot. Definitely go if you’re visiting Portland, but...More

The past few times I’ve been in Portland I’ve tried to go here to grab a quick bite and have a few drinks. Got lucky this time on a Wednesday night for 6 of us. Food is always pretty good, and is Asian fusion for...More

Description
Departure Restaurant is located atop the Nines Hotel and offers modern Asian cuisine in a sleek, cosmopolitan setting with two outdoor decks and stunning views of the city, mountains and river. Chef de Cuisine Gregory Gourdet creates traditional Asian preparations with Northwest ingredients in signature dishes such as the restaurant’s grilled kushiyaki selections, Indonesian spiced chicken and maguro karai honey sushi rolls. Departure’s bar showcases exotic cocktails, a global wine list and the city’s largest sake list. The saké and shochu list is one of the largest in the city and represents many hand-crafted, artisan producers. Departure boasts the design skills of Jeff Kovel of Skylab Architecture, one of Portland’s leading architectural firms. The overall design of the 9,000 square-foot space added a new full-level 15th floor to the original 1908 Meier & Frank building and two new rooftop patios with views overlooking downtown Portland, the Willamette River, Mt .Hood and Mount St. Helens. The design elements play off the notion of an urban escape.
