Most excellent Japanese Fusion. Small plates are remarkably delightful. High in the Portland sky, Departure provides an excellent view of the city to complement the food. Wickedly tasty sushi. Whatever you do, order the whole snapper. As good as any I've had in Japan or...More

We came early (before 5) on a beautiful evening having read about their rooftop bar. We came for drinks but had tapas sized appetizers throughout the evening. All of the appetizers were fabulous (and two were mostly meat eaters and two ate vegetables and fish)....More

The town view we had was perfect. The drinks, virgin mojito was refreshing. Pity we forgot a waistcoat that had not been found yet.

My husband and I had dinner here for our anniversary. It's an ultra-modern, bright space with great views. The seating was surprisingly comfortable, given the austere aesthetic. We ordered the brussel sprouts, fried rice with crab and sausage, prawn skewers, and green mango salad. It...More

My last couple of reviews of Departure were not favorable. After years of eating here, I had write up a few bad reviews as the service and the food had significantly slipped. I'm glad to say that the menu has changed and both the food...More

Let me start off by saying that this place is expensive. No getting around that. If you are not at that speed, this might just be a place you get drinks from. And believe me, I’m one of those people. But, we all need to...More

This place was absolutely jumping the evening we dined for dinner. The menu is very creative and the food was deliciously prepared. Our waiter was a kick and very attentive. I would go back repeatedly if I lived in Portland.

then moved inside to eat dinner. Sushi and pork bellies were awesome. Brussel sprouts were good and dim sum ok. Pretty pricey for the small portions you get. I'd definitely go have drink in the rooftop bar, but if you're very hungry, go somewhere else...More

Departure Restaurant is located atop the Nines Hotel and offers modern Asian cuisine in a sleek, cosmopolitan setting with two outdoor decks and stunning views of the city, mountains and river. Chef de Cuisine Gregory Gourdet creates traditional Asian preparations with Northwest ingredients in signature dishes such as the restaurant’s grilled kushiyaki selections, Indonesian spiced chicken and maguro karai honey sushi rolls. Departure’s bar showcases exotic cocktails, a global wine list and the city’s largest sake list. The saké and shochu list is one of the largest in the city and represents many hand-crafted, artisan producers. Departure boasts the design skills of Jeff Kovel of Skylab Architecture, one of Portland’s leading architectural firms. The overall design of the 9,000 square-foot space added a new full-level 15th floor to the original 1908 Meier & Frank building and two new rooftop patios with views overlooking downtown Portland, the Willamette River, Mt .Hood and Mount St. Helens. The design elements play off the notion of an urban escape.
