Dropped in for a cheeky Friday evening dinner. Greeted by friendly staff and advised on the best ales of week. A truly wonderful meal and made even better by the entertaining customers at the bar.. We will return very soon.

My partner and I have started popping in recently since the new landlord has taken over. Having read the recent comments I wouldnt take any notice of them, I have been local to the area for years and sadly it’s just one of those areas...where certain people do not like change. There is always a good atmosphere, beer is good, we tried the steak night last night (Thursday) and we’re really impressed! Locally sourced Aberdeen Angus steak, beautifully cooked, plenty on the plate and very reasonable! £27.95 for 2 steaks (sirloin) and a bottle of vino, extremely good value and no scrimping on quality. Keep up the good work 👍More
There were three of us visiting for Sunday lunch. My wife and I live 100 miles out of Burton and wanted to take my Burton based Mum out for Sunday Lunch. The pub website specifically said ‘Gluten Free menu available’, and the ratings were good....When we arrived though the experience for my wife was very poor. There was no GF menu available and, eventually, the (helpful) server got a menu (partially) marked-up by the chef. There were four starters available - none of these were GF, and all included some bread, with no GF bread available either. Mother’s prawn cocktail was superb but our enjoyment was limited with Dani having to just watch. For main courses there were 2 roasts and eight other choices. Two of the non-roasts were GF and the roast dinner options were advised as ‘GF available’ (which just meant taking off the Yorkshire pudding and stuffing of course). Dani went for Roast Turkey, and we had two Roast Beef dinners too - these were all very good, with plenty of veg, but Dani’s enjoyment was again limited when she saw how good our (huge) Yorkshire pudding was. It was also surprising that extra gravy (which was GF) was charged for. Eight desserts and only two were GF, and one of these was ice cream. Overall the food was good and I would recommend provided you don’t have a coeliac (like Dani) or other GF in your party, as there’s very, very little GF awareness (although they did suggest they were going to ‘sort this out’ as we left).More
Spot on Sunday Lunch! Good choice of roasts with a lovely selection of fresh vegetables. Excellent satisfying portions, maybe next time we’ll have room for a desert. Friendly attentive service. We will be back.
Terrific meal - really enjoyed our food ! I had liver & bacon which was beautifully cooked with mash, green veg and some fantastic gravy. My friends had fish & chips with mushy peas and scampi & chips. They all remarked how well cooked it...all was. We succumbed to puds most of us going for crumble & custard but one had profiteroles. Soooo good ! All in all a superb meal which we all thoroughly enjoyed! We will be back! Highly recommended!More
First time visiting here today and given the reviews was a little anxious. However I can’t fault the service or food. We went for Sunday Lunch and everyone agreed that the food was lovely and plenty of it. We will definitely be going back again...and I would recommend this to friends.More
Have just been for the best Sunday lunch around full good sized portion perfectly cooked. The young girl serving it was polite and content will definitely be back to sample more nicely home cooked food
Just made an impromptu visit to the Red Lion with my husband, we received a worm welcome and prompt service. There was a great choice on the menu and the food we ordered - chilli chicken and the dirty cheeseburger were not only delicious but...enormous portions, great value , chatty landlord and attentive staff. will definitely be back!More
Very poor experience, not the same pub it was, which unfortunately is reflected in reviews it gets, the pub was once one of the best in the area now its a shadow. Very abrupt lady working there really should be back of house. Such a...shame as well that the food is no longer a step above a basic pub. Much better options at the Cock or Meynell am afraid. They really must lift their game or I fear the worst for this pub.More
NOT TO SOUND PARANOID. But it’s very odd that all of the negative comments are from people who have only ever contributed on this business and the positive ones are from creditable accounts with numerous reviews of other businesses………
I did see the review form 11areefe while its natural for him to support the business over the road its just not the case. The attitude of the staff is terrible, its rude and uncomfortable. The food is not what it was, Sundays for example...were fantastic under Adam, Andy and Rob but its cheap and simple now not quality cuts of beef just simple silverside. Such a shame as this was such a lovely fantastic pub but this yobbish loud landlord clearly didnt have the resources to keep it running now excuse after excuse we have a make shift rude set up. Lets hope it improves!!!!!!!!More
I have been a resident of Newborough for a number of years and had many happy and memorable times in the Red Lion both under Emma & Kay and with Gail & Ryan. I read that new manager Pete has sent a fortune on putting...the pub straight I'm sure this is largely normal when taking on a new venture. Let alone an old building. What I would say though is the most upsetting part of the past few are the in consistent promises, closing early, people including myself made to feel extremely unwelcome and until recently the lack of any food offering despite announcing he was up and running a few months ago. I also hear that there was fighting in the pub. I really hope our pub finds its way back to former glory under the previous 2 tenures and is a place we can be proud of. And not the terrible environment it has become. Come on Pete up your game.More
My husband booked a table here for Mother’s Day as we used to visit frequently when we lived locally. We made a special half an hour journey and arrived a couple of minutes before our booking time. Despite the restaurant being almost empty we were...advised our table wasn’t ready and we should wait in the bar. We walked back to an almost empty bar only to be ignored by the barman. After a few minutes an older lady came in and I explained we had been sent in by the restaurant as our table wasn’t ready. She went away to check and said it was ready and we could go back through. We did and were shown to our table - at this point the restaurant was totally empty bar one table. We were given menus for the fixed price 3 course lunch. When we asked for an alternative as our children wouldn’t eat the 3 courses available, we were told this was all they were serving today. We explained that this wasn’t mentioned on their website, as this is how my husband made the booking, there was just the Sunday lunch menu which he had checked in advance to ensure there was something everyone would like. The waitress checked with a colleague who came back and confirmed that was the only menu available today. I appreciate that it was Mother’s Day but if you are offering a restricted menu this needs to be clearly communicated in advance. We sadly made the decision to leave the restaurant as the attitude of the staff, lack of any warm welcome and cold atmosphere made us incredibly reluctant to pay £30 per head for 3 courses that we wouldn’t eat. This used to be a lovely family run restaurant where you always felt welcome, it definitely isn’t anymore which is a real shame.More
Hi, sorry you felt it was a bad experience. The price was clearly stated on the menu when you was presented with it. Sorry if it was not clear enough
Lovely pub with great staff. The beer is always kept well and the atmosphere is that of a proper country pub locals and others gather together. It’s probably my favourite in the whole area
This is my local pub and I’ve seen many highs and lows. After a very difficult few months repairing and replacing old and broken equipment, sorting out a poor tired cellar and finding a good Chef, the Red Lion back!!!! Beer …… sorted, Food ……Sorted...………Atmosphere …….. Sorted!More
