Food and ambience

Ronnie's restaurant in the heart of Thornbury has turned a crumbling 17th century building into a lively, stylish eaterie and coffee lounge. Recently voted South West Restaurant of the Year by The Good Food Guide, the dining room features exposed natural stonework and beamed ceilings hung with art works from Castle Gallery. Chef-owner Ronnie Faulkner brings years of training and experience in the kitchens of stars like Anton Mosimann to his inventive modern European cuisine prepared with a British twist. Signature dishes include seasonal dishes like seared scallops wrapped in bacon, Cornish lamb with baby spring veg and lemon. Local produce is the rule, and wines are supplied by boutique vintners

We have eaten here fairly regularly over the last year or so and have come to love the small touches which raise this restaurant way above the average. Even at the height of the pandemic we managed to order take-away Sunday lunches which were great...value, superbly cooked. The attention to detail by the staff was mind boggling. I have a bad reaction to shellfish and am lactose intolerant so imagine my surprise at returning to the restaurant to find that the staff had remembered my allergies! Impressive! The food was beautifully cooked and well presented. The wine seemed to complement each course. All in all, it was another delightful experience and we will be returning once the Covid Restrictions allow dining indoors. Thank you Ronnie for a wonderful experience (again) and we shall be returning again very soon.More

Friends of ours had to postpone their wedding so on the day they should have been married we arranged a meal from Ronnie's to be cooked and delivered to their house. The service was excellent in that it arrived on time, was beautifully presented and...in true Ronnies style was also delicious. Thank you to all concerned it was a triumph.More

Visited Ronnie's for a much awaited lunch post lockdown. The new tapas style menu is fantastic. The staff were professional and knowledgeable about wine pairings to accompany the food. Despite the fact that we were outside ( covid regulations at present) there was a buzz...of happy diners and we will be returning very soon!More

My friend and I had arranged and booked a lunch at Ronnies and were greatly looking forward to it. We knew it would be outside but they have a marquee so we weren't too worried when it started to rain. However we got to Ronnies...to be told there weren't any tables available under cover- it was still raining a bit, but to come back in half an hour. There were tables but they were wet. We were offered a takeaway coffee (which we declined) and we left. I know we can't control the weather but surely this could have been anticipated and another gazebo/ marquee could have been provided? They knew how many people had booked and it was too cold, wet and blustery for us to hang around. Really disappointing.More

We sat outside in glorious sunshine. We ordered from the tapas menu and shared 8 dishes. I won't describe each dish individually, but everything was delicious and beautiful. Our server Nick was friendly and very attentive. We weren't rushed. Covid wise, we felt safe. I...can't recommend enough.More

Ive just returned from lunch at Ronnies - invited by family who live nearby. This restaurant is an absolute treasure, oh how I wish I had a restaurant like this on my doorstep. I had the duck ham rosti for my starter, which was very...light and tasty, followed by the beef fillet with chips and salad. But this description simply does not do it justice, the beef fillet was top quality, perfectly proportioned and cooked just right, it melted in my mouth. The chips were to die for. If you live near this restaurant and haven’t visited please go - the service is friendly and attentive and its very well priced. What a gem!More

We thoroughly enjoyed the tasting menu during the Eat Out to Help period. Each dish was absolutely delighful except for the beef, baba ghanoush and cous cous dish but that was more to do with my palate than the dish itself. The gnocci was accidentally...omitted from one of the dishes but that was not an issue for us and they were apologetic. Ronnies is in a class of its own in this locality and I am very much looking forward to trying the Sunday lunch - if I can secure a table!More

The food is absolutely outstanding. You pay pub prices but get a dish that no pub could ever provide. Wine and drinks prices are very high, but given the quality of food and service, it’s okay. You are going to get astonishing food, but keep...in mind that they add a 10% service charge. That is wholly acceptable on the food, but it does make your very expensive drinks even more costly. I’ve been as honest as I can be. Fantastic food, though keep in mind your bill will rocket with drinks and service charge.More
