The atmosphere is as authentic as the food. Make sure you reserve for the traditional dinner - food is served on a tray of injera (bread) and you eat with your hands. (Hot,cleansing hand towels are provided before the meal) Appetizers are terrific and the menu has a strong selection of dishes. Order the Traditional Ethiopian Coffee Ceremony after dinner... More

As soon as you walk in the door, the spices used in cooking provide a refreshing welcome to the restaurant. We ate traditional Ethiopian (with our hands) using injira (bread) to scoop up our food. Dorowat (spicy chicken), Sega tibs (beef tips) along with lentils, yellow split peas and cabbage, carrots and potatoes were my choice and they were DELICIOUS!... More

Went with my wife and inlaws. Very much enjoyed it. Service was a bit on the slower side but it was a nice atmosphere so we didn't mind. Food was excellent. A bit exotic so know what you're getting into before you go, but we all loved it and will definitely be back.

There are not many choices in Cleveland and I wanted the coffee experience and was not disappointed. Very causal place where they make everyone feel at home. Food omg the fridge beef samusa so good with a sweet spicy chili sauce, collard greens and then cheese for appetizers so yummy. We has the veg plate and meat - the beats... More

Apparently the restaurant had been quite busy before we arrived - at least that was the explanation given for the very hot room. The food is delicious. Our orders were served on one platter which took up almost the entire table. This is a perfect way to share because even though you eat with your fingers, they are very clean... More

The vegetarian selection is excellent. I highly recommend the beet salad. They have gluten free injera but you have to call ahead. The appetizers we got on this trip were ok not great. And I certainly had enough carbs for the month. We got the vegetarian sampler for dinner. I did not care for the collard greens but everything else... More

Want a fun change of pace? Consider this. Empress Taytu is an Ethiopian restaurant operating in Cleveland for a decade or more. It's actually in the old Slovenian neighborhood on St. Clair Avenue near E. 62nd street. Parking is extremely convenient. We were able to park about 10 feet from the door in an enclosed parking lot. Once you step... More

Delicious Ethiopian food. Lots of variety. Soft and addicting injera. My friends and I fight over the leftover once we got back home. Yum yum yum! Service is world-class. Owners are very friendly. I felt like I was served food by my long-lost aunt and uncle, they welcomed us like we were family! We were a large group (12 people?),... More

The food is excellent! We had the veggie combo with a side of beef tips/Ethiopian cake and ice cream! Yum, yum! The ambiance was grand; experiencing the culture by sitting in the hut and eating at the communal table on the traditional basket table! Ainnslee, the owner's daughter, spend a lot of time with us talking to us about the... More

Don't expect silverware at this gem of a restaurant. It is Ethiopian true and true-from what I can tell. Great for vegans and vegetarians. We asked for a basket table where everyone shares the food. No silver ware just Injera(a flat bread) that you use to pick up your food. There were 6 of us and we began with the... More

Empress Taytu Ethiopian Restaurant offers a unique and flavorful dining experience. The traditions here are authentic, and all around you is the scenery, music, people, aromas, food, art, history, and culture of this ancient civilization. Optional traditional basket tables (mesobs) are in the huts (gojo bet) to fully experience Ethiopian cuisine and culture. Utensils are absent (unless otherwise requested), because in Ethiopia you eat with your hands by picking up your food with pieces of injera. Injera is the teff grain and wheat combination flatbread that will hold the various spiced meat and/or vegetable presentations known as 'wat's. There is a base layer of injera on which the 'wat' sits in your platter. More than half of our menu is vegan, and all of our entrées are gluten free (including a majority of the appetizers). Just remember to request the gluten free injera, which is made from 100% teff. The Ethiopian Coffee Ceremony is another experience we offer that makes Empress Taytu both unique and authentic. During this ceremony, we roast coffee beans from scratch and bring them out for you to see and smell. Then we grind the beans and brew your coffee the traditional Ethiopian way and serve your coffee in a handmade Ethiopian coffee pot (jebena) while burning frankincense. This is typically served after your meal to help cleanse your palate.
