Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.

After reading mixed reviews we were unsure whether to visit the market or not but decided to give it a go as it was very close to our hotel.
The market is busy and bustling with locals and tourists with a large variety or stalls (although most stalls sell roughly the same produce). As you'd expect you are approached by locals asking you to view their stall and sample the food on offer but take your time and wander round as you are likely to get a higher price if you commit to the first stall. Be prepared to haggle!
We ended up with a Zanzibar pizza from Mr Nutella, 4 marinated beef skewers from a stall I can't remember the name of and a litre bottle of water for £2.50 (7000 tzs). The food was tasty and easily found a space on the sea wall to sit and eat with many others.
All in all we had a good experience but be prepared to be polite but firm and patient with sellers, they are proud and sometimes passion can be misconstrued as pushy.

It's a nice refreshing place, located right in the heart of the city in Stone Town. It sees a regular influx of tourists. You'd be slightly misguided due to the name because it isn't much of a garden, just an open area with a couple patches of greenery here and there and a bunch of boulders, stone slabs etc., where you can sit and relax. It does have several eateries in and around where you can enjoy local Swahili cuisine - although there are extremely limited options if you're vegetarian or vegan. If you visit during the day, you'll be greeted with a spectacular view of the ocean with several ships and boats harboured. It's calm and quieter during the day, albeit quite sunny but I preferred to visit during this time due to lesser crowd. It's much more lively at night with residents and tourists comings from all over the city to enjoy food by the shore, under the stars.
The biggest downside for me was the lack of street lights and even the ones that were there were extremely dim. You'd have to be really mindful of your steps and careful of what you're eating as you really can't see what you're eating!
This can be a bonus or downside depending on the person you are - there's quite a lot of stray cats in and around the park. I did see quite a number of people feeding them some of their food :)

This is a fun experience to see at least once, as the seaside comes to life here at night. The sales pitches begin immediately upon arrival, and are persistent, though also usually fun and good-natured. The food is solid but unspectacular, and better can be had elsewhere. You will also pay a premium for the location, though not a huge one. Negotiate as needed, or you will pay a significant foreigner premium at most places.
A special mention to the coffee and tea vendor, an older gentleman who makes your drink custom on the spot, at the highest quality.
It is worth moving through the stalls and seeing everything on offer first before ordering, which also sends a message that you are willing to walk away, leading to better prices, faster. I also recommend that whatever you order, you have it as walking food, as otherwise beggars and street peddlers are frequent and persistent.

At first we thought the place has a nice and authentic atmosphere even though we were constantly bothered by local "chefs" but we took it as a part of the Zanzibar experience.
When we finally decided to eat at one of the BBQ booth the chef showed us all varieties of skewers. We then checked the price with him and were told from 1 000 TZS to 12 000 TZS per skewer (depending on size and type).
We chose 4 skewers, falafel and coconut bread (total price was supposed to be around 30 000 TZS) but he told us to pay after finishing the food (no worries - Hakuna Matata).
When we finished and went to pay we were asked for 71 000 TZS. Absolutely crazy!
We weren't about to pay him what he had asked for and said we'll only pay what we'd agreed on. Obviously the chef wasn't happy and started to be quite rude and aggressive.
Huge hussle but we insisted on that and gave him 32 000 TZS (we managed to turn him from "Hakuna Matata" to "Matata").
If I could I would have rated minus 5 stars.

I have Asian look but have lived in East Africa fora fews months for works. I know the price for most of street food in East Africa. they don't serve seafood as street food, it is easy to pick up a popular samosa at those stalls to compare the price. I didn't discuss ed about the price he told me to pay 35k for food usually 18K . Pleas bu sure about the price before there are two lists one for local one tourist and also if you don't ask about price before maybe you pay 300%..., the seller didn't bother to negotiate the price. Their income from other tourists might be enough for their living.

To be clear, this isn't really a garden. It's a collection of outdoor food stands adjacent to a few trees that, at night, is packed. I didn't personally eat any of the street food, but you can come here and sample the best of local cuisine in a very vibrant atmosphere.
Yes, they are pushy. You will not take more than three steps without someone literally jumping in front of you and trying to get you to eat from their cart. Should you approach a cart to get a better look, good luck.
That being said, it's a local experience.
If you do buy food, you can sit along the short wall to eat. We just walked through.

Scam warning.
Guy with broken teeth solds us 5 sticks of food for almost 40 euros. (Which would worth 10 euros or less in a restaurant in Germany).
Food quality was terrible also.
Never visit without local guide or better never visit. Destroyed the mood for the evening when asked how can it be xx.
Scamming foreigners.
Listen to other reviews as well. Ask for the price with a local witness.
They would remove the meat while talking to you and say now it’s destroyed and you have to pay xxx.
Complete scam.
Never again.

Well if i only read reviews before.
Locals do amazing job selling you the food. As a foreigner you will get approached right away. If you want to orser something ASK FOR PRICE or you will regret it. We end up paing 180k shillings for few pieces which shouls have cost 80 max.
They tried to charge me 30k for two cups of sugar cane which i knew price for. When k told them its only 5k they suddenly remember it was only 5k....overpriced scammers...nice play to try but be very very carefull about price

Be very careful here. The charismatic touts will
Give you very detailed descriptions of their offerings of fresh seafood. They offer drinks and find a place to sit. Then the shock is when the bill comes. Four Skewers of seafood and two juices were $65
Great for photo opps. Horrible for eating. Restaurants have way better food for much lower prices

If the location & atmosphere was not so beautiful, I would give it 1 star. Vastly differenf food prices for locals vs tourists, and food sellers will shamelessly try and rip you off. FIX THE PRICE 100% BEFORE YOU BUY, preferably with a local to witness your purchase.
Better still, don't eat or drink here, come enjoy the sights, then go to a nearby restaurant for a better meal at cheaper price!

Night food market, where locals are coming more than tourists. All stalls have almost the same - either seafood grill or Zanzibar "pizza", the last one is more recommended in terms of safety. Very nice cane juice, to chich they add ginger and lime

Nice place to people watch during the day. There are locals living their lives, traders and people who will try to sell you experiences such as henna hand painting. During the night the street food market opens and it is great for the experience. However, a lot of the traders can be quite persistent and a lot of the food is already cooked and heated up when you buy it which means it’s tough. The hygiene standards of many of the stalls also leave a lot to be desired. Many traders also change their prices so it’s best to pay in advance and give exact money so they don’t withhold your change. For many it’s probably better to soak up the experience and perhaps eat elsewhere.

It was a terrible experience. When we picked our food they said one price, then when we got our food, another price. They almost charge us 45$ for two of us. I think that is a bit too much for a street food. And the atittude they had towards costumers was bad. It was really bad experience.

Great vibe. Lots of stalls with skewers of various fish & meats, plus salads and other sides. Also kebabs and local dishes. Difficult to choose which one to go to. They explain all the varieties but really pressed you to pick and have it cooked. They don't take the payment until you have eaten. It was very tasty but please make sure you know what you are paying!! We feel we overpaid. Also referring to others comments about how long it is on the stalks for (no refridgeration or ice), snd also if it doesn't sell does it come out the next evening. We enjoyed the food and were absolutely fine, just the price was expensive.
