Great vibe. Lots of stalls with skewers of various fish & meats, plus salads and other sides. Also kebabs and local dishes. Difficult to choose which one to go to. They explain all the varieties but really pressed you to pick and have it cooked....They don't take the payment until you have eaten. It was very tasty but please make sure you know what you are paying!! We feel we overpaid. Also referring to others comments about how long it is on the stalks for (no refridgeration or ice), snd also if it doesn't sell does it come out the next evening. We enjoyed the food and were absolutely fine, just the price was expensive.More
It seems like they’ve cleaned up their act compared to the 2022 reviews, which were alarming. No harassment, and low, posted prices on almost all stalls. As a vegetarian there’s slim pickings. Tried a Zanzibar pizza and wasn’t overly impressed, though at $2 it’s hard...to complain! Great people watching with the water right behind you. About 95% of the people here are locals or Tanzanian/Kenyan tourists.More
Nice place to people watch during the day. There are locals living their lives, traders and people who will try to sell you experiences such as henna hand painting. During the night the street food market opens and it is great for the experience. However,...a lot of the traders can be quite persistent and a lot of the food is already cooked and heated up when you buy it which means it’s tough. The hygiene standards of many of the stalls also leave a lot to be desired. Many traders also change their prices so it’s best to pay in advance and give exact money so they don’t withhold your change. For many it’s probably better to soak up the experience and perhaps eat elsewhere.More
Lively entertaining night market with multiple street food BBQ stalls, along with different local and multinational foods on offer Like most places like this. Only eat if your GI tract can 'stomach' it 💩
Forodhani Garden where is the Market every night, of people they called Night Market, A very nice place where you can have Seafood
I had no idea that people could walk around safely at night and go to a stunning park like this. The park is full of food vendors with amazing foods and sights that will absolutely amaze you. It is a culture experience that I have...never had and miss the place every night! I live in Florida, and I am afraid to walk to my car at night. But in Zanzibar, there is no crime, no guns, no crime to women, and only peace, love and sharing. I was able to walk from my hotel alone, all the way to the park. I was greeting with love by everyone. This was the first time in my life that I felt that kind of love and safety. Every single night, Forodhani gardens turns into an outdoor bbq with so many vendors. I made friends that will last a lifetime and had amazing food every time. I miss the smell of bbq and spice every day since I left. I miss the beautiful and welcoming people every day. I miss everything in Stone Town Zanzibar. I am going back as soon as I can! I am trying so hard to go. I feel like walking away from everything instead of completing what I need to do first. This park is safe for women and children! It is safe for solo travelers, it is safe for everyone! Don't waste your life worrying about traveling, just do it. You will only regret not doing things when you are older!More
We're well travelled & usually don't make mistakes like at this market. Don't eat anything on skewers - only shawarma & Zanzibar pizza worth it, cooked fresh as you stand there & reasonably priced. The seafood/meat sticks are pre-cooked & then re-cooked when you buy...them. Food is horribly dry, tasteless & unhygienic. We went on our first night in Zanzibar & it was a mistake. The food tasted terrible & was expensive, like $50 AUD for 2 people & definitely not worth it. We sat down on the park benches which were dirty, there was rubbish everywhere & an army of stray cats. As we began eating, like 6 cats came and watched us eat which was weirdly uncomfortable. Food was very very overpriced for what you get (except the Kebabs, which are $2.50 USD) and the pizza was ok. Aside from these two items, there are hagglers EVERYWHERE & they just don't let up. Finally, do NOT attend the market beyond 10pm - it's open late but no one is there (tourists) & it's really not a good experience. We went again at the end of our trip at 6:30 & it was busy & a more pleasant, however nothing amazing. Won't be back.More
This is complete scam. Also it gave food poisoning. As other people have already mentioned the. Aggressive sellers would actually attack you. 4 sticks without drink costed 80 usd. That is outrageously expensive in any country of world. Same thing 5 star hotel costed 9...usd(and no food poisoning) so never expected to pay 80. But writing this review as it gave food poisoning destroyed the next half week. And medical facilities are not you would like to visit. Keep distance. Disgusting atmosphere. After getting food poisoning, it makes one feel vomiting just thinking about it.More
Scam warning. Guy with broken teeth solds us 5 sticks of food for almost 40 euros. (Which would worth 10 euros or less in a restaurant in Germany). Food quality was terrible also. Never visit without local guide or better never visit. Destroyed the mood...for the evening when asked how can it be xx. Scamming foreigners. Listen to other reviews as well. Ask for the price with a local witness. They would remove the meat while talking to you and say now it’s destroyed and you have to pay xxx. Complete scam. Never again.More
People selling the street food in stone town are crooks : we ask for the price and they elude the question. No menu in sight. We take 2 tiny skewers and the guy suddenly says it’s 21 dollars ( for the same price and can...have a real meal in the restaurant). At this point he suddenly takes from under the table the menu with the outrageous prices on it. To sum up : these people are scamming tourists and they know it. Nobody would buy this food at this price. PS : still waiting for the possible food poisoningMore
We were warned that going here without a guide, would be risky as we could get food that has been kept around for a few days. We went one evening after having a few drinks, given the previous advice we went for a vegetable and...cheese pizza, as we thought it would be low risk. It was cooked in front of us, it consisted of very very thin pizza case inside which was put (local version of) diarylea cheese, egg, finely chopped onion and pepper. This was then fried in front of us. It was a one off that was more omlette than pizza.More
If the location & atmosphere was not so beautiful, I would give it 1 star. Vastly differenf food prices for locals vs tourists, and food sellers will shamelessly try and rip you off. FIX THE PRICE 100% BEFORE YOU BUY, preferably with a local to...witness your purchase. Better still, don't eat or drink here, come enjoy the sights, then go to a nearby restaurant for a better meal at cheaper price!More
The market is very fun to watch, but the food was nothing special. Also be prepared to everyone trying to sell you food.
It was a terrible experience. When we picked our food they said one price, then when we got our food, another price. They almost charge us 45$ for two of us. I think that is a bit too much for a street food. And the...atittude they had towards costumers was bad. It was really bad experience.More
