This cosy, friendly café in Aszófő -- a small village on the north shore of Lake Balaton -- is equally good for a late breakfast or lunch, a short but memorable pit stop on a bike tour, or afternoon tea with cakes, and a welcome...contrast to the touristy, overcrowded, and often pretentious places at nearby Tihany. The terrace has a view of Lake Balaton, though not the dramatic vista offered by some hilltop cafés on the north shore, but a nice, broad view. The location is one block from the Balaton main bike trail and the main road, so it's easily accessible, yet it feels quiet, peaceful, and off the beaten track. The quality of the food and service was excellent. So much so that we came back twice shortly after the first time. The waitstaff was attentive, polite and unflappably friendly, even though some people in our party kept changing and confusing orders and talking at the same time... Everything we tried was delicious, including a lentil soup with tarragon, various cakes, the best of which was a poppyseed cake with home-made apricot preserve, although the orange chocolate cake was not far behind. The daily selection of the freshly made cakes varies. The portions are big (both for the soups and the cakes we ordered), so you can easily split one if you are not particularly hungry. The various hot and cold coffees were all perfect (including some non-dairy milk versions), and the wines were good quality. We were there during a heat wave, so we always sat on the terrace under big parasols, but there is plenty of room inside, where you will also find a nice selection of delicacies from small producers in the region. The place has wheelchair access, and you can rent some rooms upstairs, but those I haven't seen. Check opening times, because they are not open late and are closed some days of the week (though perhaps this will change after the pandemic).More

Trying to visit the peninsula of Tihany we stranded in a sea of cars. We turned around, drove back and just took the first way left. In the next turn of the road, by accident, Teahaz Nagyi Kertje appeared. We stopped and entered the terrace...for a drink. There were some more people present who friendly greeted us. We sat down underr a big parasol and the waiter appeared. In good English ( he liked to practice with us ) we ordered two lemonades. Enjoying the drink, with a wide ponorama-view over the Balaton-lake with de Tihany-peninsula in the background, we studied the lunch possibilities. I had pork-medallions, which were crispy on the outside en deliciously soft inside. The garlic slices were as crispy, fresh and strong. After that a home-made pie and a coffee. Summary: quiet terrace with great view, excellent kitchen en drinks, friendly servce.More

Great variety of tea, daily choice of cakes which are delicious. There are no flowerless or diary free cakes but there is non diary milk for your tea or coffee. You can eat lunch here too. Soup is a huge portion, even 2 people can...get full and it tastes great. On the balcony you have a nice view to the lake. Inside there are some sofas in the corner as well as some real wooden furniture, and a fireplace for the winter. Service is very good. They also have some room upstairs, working as a hotel.More
