Yes, yes, yes. This is the original. This is the one you want to go to. It is real. It is raw (not literally). It is Detroit. It is tasty, messy, wonderful. Must order at least 2 of these coney dogs with everything on it. And then put your phone away and just dive in and enjoy the moment, your... More

I went here because, you have to right? I was told by a local to go here first over American. They said it's more real, so I did, and did see a lot of local people including Detroit Police stop in for a couple dogs. The restaurant was smaller than the American Coney Island and had far fewer menu choices... More

Been going there since I was a kid in the 1970s....noting has really changed. Great coneys, fast service and relatively cheap. the age and poor condition of the building are part of the charm

After the Redwings game, we walked over the LCI for some dogs. We arrived just before the post-game rush and found a seat at the counter. 3 minutes after we sat down, there was a line of people waiting for a seat! I ordered 2 dogs with the works (chili, onions, cheese, mustard). My friend got his with just cheese... More

The guy that served us kept scratching his belly and beard and would pick up glasses with his fingers on the inside of the glass. He would also scoop the ice up with the glass. The place was just plain dirty that I couldn't eat what I ordered.

Like so many others, I did the comparison tasting between Lafayette and American. No contest- Lafayette is the winner. I consider this to be one of the finest restaurants in Detroit. On a short list with Mabel Gray, Selden Standard and Chartreuse.

Always enjoy stopping in here for a quick bite and to enjoy the people watching. Both the wait staff and the clientele make this a true Detroit experience. You have to eat at Lafayette because it's much better than American. Reasonable prices and great coneys.

If you're from Detroit you know the area's affection for chili dogs. Lafayette is king of the coney, though American Coney Island, which is right next door, has its own entourage of chili dog groupies who will fight you over that opinion. Lafayette is Detroit's version of The Billy Goat Tavern ("Cheburger Cheburger" fame). It's an icon that shouldn't be... More
