Bring your wet wipes! King crab and Snow crab combo plate - the best. The amount you get is worth the wait and tastes amazing. Don't come anticipating having a quiet relaxing meal. Bring your cash, as this place is a cash only restaurant and bar. Not too often do you see a bathtub in the bathroom either! Great place... More

For whatever reason, Half Shell doesn't get its props. Located at 676 West Diversey Parkway, at the northeast corner of Orchard and Diversey, in one half of the basement of a two-story brownstone, Half Shell is a no-frills, cash only neighborhood pub in Lincoln Park that has been dishing up a delicious seafood menu since 1968. You won't find it... More

Definitely a neighborhood dive bar. Old and no frills, but the food was great for a late-night find. Clam chowder and lobster bisque were excellent as was the blue point oysters. The fried clams were a little bland, but the homemade sauces helped. Overall, a fun find.

I have been coming here for about 27 years. This little casual "joint" is consistently amazing! It has colored lights up you're around the freshest seafood you can buy at alarmingly reasonable prices. The shrimp is colossal as are the crab legs and perfectly fresh, The menu is a huge assortment of very inexpensively priced very very high quality seafood.... More

I have been here twice and the food is always good. The jumbo fried shrimp is tasty and you get a load of food. Be awarw, cash only. Guys, remove your hats before entering.

This is one of those small basement cafe/bars you might walk past but you really need to try. They have a limited seafood menu but everything is fresh and tasty. Try the bluepoint oysters and/or the crab leg plate along with a cold Heiniken on tap. Excellent!!

Visited this quaint restaurant which was established in 1969. Very small bar with local appeal. We had oysters on the half shell and the fried perch. All was good.

A friend ssid this was his favorite restaurant! Visiting Chicago for my birthday, it was right on our walking route to the zoo. Had to check it out. A little confused, we had to walk downstairs to get to it. Remember if you go, "gentlemen remove their hats"... My guess it's for the secuity cams as THEY ONLY ACCEPT CASH!... More

I've been going to the Half Shell for many years. It's always great food and a fun atmosphere. The ice cold Heineken on tap goes so well with crab legs, fries and lollipop. Although you may have reservations about going downstairs into a basement to eat, it's really a treat - that's why there's always a wait. Try the sashimi... More

Although the ambiance is hard to find, the crab is not! Felt like we were in hideaway bar during prohibition, in the basement, dark, cash only. But you won't regret the king crab legs!! They were huge (approx. 1 pound per serving) served with a garlic butter & thin fries.
