Didn’t take anything out for dinner, so took the family to this German restaurant. Décor wasn’t very reminiscent of Germany at all. We were seated promptly. Our waitress came over and asked about appetizers. We order the pretzel. However, as we sat there waiting for ours to come out, newly arriving quest were given a basket full of broken pretzels... I have marked this for the food which was basic at best. The beers were good and the place is tatty but interesting. I spend quite a lot of time in Germany and I guess I would describe the food as German food from from the sixties. I wouldn't go back.

This place used to be great. The owner took an attitude when I complained about the food. If you look at my reviews you will see I'm not about writing negative reviews but Trip Advisor somehow knew to put this in front of me. We stopped going to this restaurant about a year and a half ago.Because of the attitude... More

Went for lunch with a friend who lived in Germany and his report was very good. The food is good and there is lots of it. Hadn't eaten much German cuisine before, but would recommend this restaurant.

Recently had a Sunday lunch with friends at the Old Heidelberg. At the opening bell, they were already out of the most interesting item on the special menu. The food was uninspired, not hot, bland, but at least there was a lot of it. The potato pancakes were especially disappointing. - not even sure why they were call potato pancakes -... More

My wife and I are adventurous foodies. We had some experience with the essentials - schnitzel, bratwurst, red cabbage. Old H afforded us the opportunity to go far beyond that - they have an extensive yet well thought out menu, and excellent beer to match. Our server was great - he knew his stuff, made good recommendations, and was constantly... More

I always enjoy the schnitzel but this time several of us tried their specials. I had the duck and it was great. Others had the lamb chops and said they hadn't had lamb that tasted so good in a long time. The desert that got raves was the apple strudel..excellent.

We fined early, and found hust one other table occupied, but unfortunately the nearby table for two was SO noisy , we could hardly hear one another. Meal arrived after twenty min and was not very hot. Difficult to cut pork shanks with cutlery provided, meat dry which means it was warmed in microwave . Portions enormous so we shared... More

Craving German food in CT? Look no further that the Old Heidelberg in Bethel, CT. The building is a quaint cottage that looks as though it was picked up from Germany and placed here. The inside of the building is small, but when full on a Friday night it isn't overcrowded. It also features a large beer garden outside in... More

Authentic German Cuisine served in a traditional atmosphere. Small dining area inside but large beer garden during the season. Amazing German recipes cooked to perfection. If you are in a rush, don't come here. In keeping with German tradition this is an experience not just a meal. Take your time, relax and enjoy the beer.
