Just when a Texas Transplant to Beautiful Colorado Springs was thinking it would cost us round trip Airline tickets back to Dallas to get our Mexican fix, we found our New spot. Tucked away in a nondescript strip center off the main path through town...in Monument, Colorado you'll find "Arlene's Beans." Having learned to not judge a book by its cover or a movie by its trailer, Arlene & Bobby's Family place is much the same. Online reviews were good, but we all know those can be manipulated, so a Saturday afternoon adventure would bring us here. The casual walk up counter where you place your order was steps away from an extensive menu that was filled with what sounded like great dishes. Options from Fountain drinks to cold bottled "Mexican Coke", "Jarritos" & bottled water, chocolate milk and honest kids drinks were all ice cold along with a great cold beer selections.
Now, I am told the "Arlene's Mean Margarita" is a winner made from scratch with no mixes just good ole citrus and the good stuff, but that's for our next dinner out with friends.
We ordered Chips & Salsa, a Chili Relleno& Tamale plate and a "Carne Asada" stuffed Chimichanga Plate, each served with pinto beans, mexican rice, a fresh lettuce & tomato side salad and Great sauces. Now, having eaten great Mexican food multiple times weekly for the past 5 decades and previously owning multiple restaurants myself, I know a thing or two about it. The food is all made to order and from scratch was delivered within a few minutes to our table and yes, it looked great, but know the real test shall now begin. My first bite was of my Chili Relleno and it did not disappoint and the tamale was the perfect ratio of masa to filling and steamed perfectly filled with a scrumptious filling. The beans were slow cooked and tender and the rice fluffy and a great compliment to the main attractions.
I noticed no one at our table was talking, as we seldom take a breath, only to learn his Huge Chimichanga was a perfect crispy package filled with delicious carne asada, cheese, beans and delectable sauces. We both kept saying this is my last bite and then we'd take one more. Sad to say we filled up long before we got to enjoy all of our fresh handmade Chips and fresh salsa, which was incredible.
We never made it to order dessert, but noticed they offered some fantastic selections like Tres Leches Cake, Churros & Fried Ice cream.
I had to before leaving ask to speak with the Owner, who graciously & quickly came from the kitchen to tell him how wonderful the food was and learn that the friendly cashier who helped us along with other Family members all run this "Gem". I cannot say just how thrilled I am that Arlene, Bobby & their Family are now our new found Mexican spot.
FYI - I also hear they offer catering and I will look forward to next time.More
