We didn't know it existed until the day before so we quickly made a plan to visit. They were having tea and were full so we were only able to visit the gift shop. We were amazed to see a, to scale, model of the house there. The story of how it came to be built was interesting. The ladies... More

I took my Mother here for her birthday. I have not been here for over 30 years! The food was as good as it was then. We each had the entree of the week, which was Chicken Cordon Bleu. It was perfectly prepared and served with rice and local vegetables. As it was her birthday, she got dessert for free.... More

Showcasing the produce that grows in the Salinas valley that John wrote about, this restaurant, serving cheap and delicious simple food, is staffed by cheerful volunteers. The food is only a small part of the attraction however - getting to look around, and eat in, the house where John Steinbeck grew up is the main draw. The upstairs part of... More

The group who runs the house and hosts the lunches and teas are knowledgable, welcoming, and full of fun Steinbeck trivia.

Fantastic volunteers, who are the servers, fantastic cook, lunch in Steinbeck's home. They close at 2:00, limited space for seating, so you should make reservations during busy lunch time, BUT, we got there at 1:20 and they were able to seat us, party of 3. Weekly food specials, but other items available. Desserts were great, too, we tried all 3... More

Enjoy a gourmet lunch served by gracious volunteers in a beautifully preserved historic setting. One of the best restaurants Salinas has to offer.

Stopped for lunch today and it was delicious. We had the tomato leek soup, caprese salad and manicotti. Home made rolls were very nice. The waitresses are volunteers and are sweethearts and the gratuities go toward the upkeep of the house which is beautiful!

This is a must-see place when in Salinas. Run by warm and friendly volunteers, this birthplace of John Steinbeck is a wonderful backdrop for the lunches served here. The menus change weekly with just a few choices, but the food is always tasty and homespun. We had zucchini lasagne with tomato leek soup which were both good. We were the... More

We drove through Salinas and just decided to stop in. We did not know the closing time was 2 pm, we came 1:55, and were ready to leave again, however, we were welcomed warmly inside in the beautiful rooms and had a table assigned. The food was very delicious and we had a wonderful Steinbeck ice tea combination to go... More
