We grabbed a quick lunch at this hidden little gem right outside Muir Beach and down the mountain from Muir National Monument. The atmosphere and food choices are authentic “English pub” and well worth the visit.

Terrible experience. After our visit they have taken money multiple times from our credit card. They do not answer messages nor answer the phone. Stay away

Stopped here for lunch following a beautiful hike and visit to Muir Beach. It’s one of the few places for a meal in the area and the setting is lovely, an easy walk from the beach. The outdoor seating area is especially nice. Staff was...friendly and the atmosphere is very welcoming. The food options are somewhat limited (English pub fare) and average in quality. Our group had the fish & chips, the roast beef sandwich, and beef stew. Our experience was enhanced by the overall pleasant atmosphere.More

The formerly charming Pelican Inn is no longer charming. (Note: we only dined in the restaurant, and did not stay in the rooms). The reservation we made - in person - for dinner was completely ignored (“Oh, sorry, we cancelled all our dinner reservations”. Um,...we’re you going to let us know? “We just did”). Managed to find a spot at a back table anyway, but we’re told a few minutes later that we had to move “because of another reservation”. So apparently some reservations are honored, but not all…. Then a harried looking guy comes out and says, “ You need to order right now because we are out of Everything…”. And the evening went downhill from there. Wrong numbers of items ordered, items missing from the check, etc. Eventually everyone is fed (food was mediocre) and we scramble to pay the bill and get the heck out of there. The next morning we discover that we had been given some stranger’s credit card instead of ours. We trudge back, figure it all out and there is not so much as a simple apology. More like an oops. The management of this place is a disaster. Do not recommend. Regardless of family history with this place, we will be avoiding it from now on!More

Honestly, it might all be fine. Especially if your visit is of the “hey, let’s try this cute little place” (read: spontaneous) nature. But you really have to just let go of any expectations. Any. Like, even though the website says they’re taking reservations for...New Year’s Eve dinner, the staff tell you: 1. not yet (they don’t know when), 2. not for another couple of weeks (so call back), 3. not at all… or 4. they just don’t pick up the phone (or answer email, and no they don’t use an online reservation service). And even though you make a point of showing up in person and tracking down the manager (who writes down all your info, and tells you to your face that you’re all set)… don’t be attached to the idea that you have said reservation when you show up with your 90 year old father and visiting family from out of town. (By the way, you should know that someone was supposed to call and tell people that they weren’t going to honor reservations. But… then they didn’t.) But OK, you find an open table for a party of 6 in the dining room, where it’s “first come, first serve.” Except then, you get kicked out of your table because of a reservation (yes, a reservation that they didn’t cancel. Why? Because it’s for guests who are staying at the inn. If you’re not staying at the inn, you are no one). But, you are advised that you can move to another table, just order NOW because the kitchen is running out of EVERYTHING. OK, so you place your order and then: they try to dump six half-dozen orders of oysters on you (when you ordered a single half-dozen), make up a new order of drinks when you ask for another round (which they have, clearly printed on the tab they’re keeping open for you), and bring additional salads and potato side dishes (which may explain why their kitchen was running out of food). In the end, it all seems to work out, so hey, here’s to going with the flow. And then, the next day you realize that in the urgent lackadaisical disorder of the evening, they handed you the wrong credit card when you paid the tab. So, it’s back to the inn to return someone else’s credit card (and hopefully retrieve yours) and a call to your credit card company to check whose dinner you paid for. Which, it turns out, was the party of 14 (whose reservation was honored). Thanks to them for noticing that they were significantly undercharged. Because the inn’s response to the credit card mix up is a nonchalant: “Oh, that’s no good.” No acknowledgment of responsibility for a potentially costly error for you, or for interrupting family time on New Year’s Day to clean up their mess. So, by all means, go. Just triple check your order, your bill and the credit card/change they return to you. It will probably all work out.More

It’s been almost 10 years since our last visit to the glorious Pelican Inn. But it’s always been our intention to return regularly. Our recent visit might change that. We came excited for respite and proud to invite local friends who had never been there...to join us for dinner. We won’t be doing that again. The Pelican Inn is a shadow of her former self. Yes the building is still as charming as ever, but management is sorely lacking. It seems as if the owners have just ignored the place and put it in the hands of a staff that really doesn’t care. Upon check in, it was almost impossible to find anyone to help us. We understand the challenges of Covid staffing, so we will let that one slide. The problems begin in the restaurant. The place is understaffed, but the people who do work the dinner shift are rude, neglectful and obnoxious. This is especially true of one male staffer. I don’t recall his name but he’s fairly young, and pretty large. Black hair pulled into a pony tail. I was told that he may be the son of the manager. We started the evening in the little library behind the pub. We brought our own wine and cheese, which is apparently allowed but not welcomed. We asked for plates and silverware, which were reluctantly brought to us. We asked for the fireplace to be lit, since it was a chilly night. The same big dude came in complaining, like the whole thing was beneath him. His failed and half-hearted attempt lasted at least 20 minutes. But we did have a nice long view of his plumber’s crack and his grumpy attitude. SO that was fun. He finally gave up and the older member of the staff (his dad?) took care of it. In the restaurant, the same big dude ignored requests for things like silverware, menus, napkins. My wife asked for water and he literally said “that’s not my job”. We laughed it off and did our best to enjoy the evening with friends. The food remains solid, but patience is a must. The next night, back in the library, we met a young couple celebrating their wedding anniversary. They were locals who got engaged at the Pelican Inn just a few years ago. They hiked from Mill Valley and wanted a romantic evening. They ordered the cheese plate (sub-par), and of course the big dude didn’t bring them silverware. They requested it twice. He finally brought it in and LITERALLY THREW THE SILVERWARE AT THE COUPLE, KNIFE BLADE FIRST!!! They were in shock, and much better sports about it than I would have been. As we packed up to check out the next morning, we noticed the shower curtain in our room was covered in mold. Another sign of neglect. We had trouble finding anyone to help us get checked out. When we did, I complained about the young man and the woman who I assume was on front desk duty (who was very nice by the way), indicated that we weren’t the first to complain about the neglect and the rudeness of the big dude. If the owners of our beloved Pelican Inn are reading this, I beg you. Please put some TLC into your inn. It’s a landmark that deserves much better care than it’s currently being given. And please demand that your staff treat your customers like guests. Kindness and decent service is not too much to ask. The big dude has got to go.More

Very disappointed by this visit. Granted it was a busy Sunday lunchtime - but they do not seemed geared up to handle busy times. It was a thirty minute stand in a queue (inside, no social distancing, but masks worn) to order the food at...the bar (no waiter/waitress service) and then had to pay a compulsory fixed gratuity since we had a party of eight (for basically fast food service??). The staff that dumped the food on the table neither smiled or communicated. The batter on the fish was partially uncooked - it seems the kitchen was that slammed that they were trying to cur corners with cooking times. Being British I've eaten a lot of fish and chips over the years and this ranks up there as one of the worst. Pretty bad for what was an almost $30 plate of food ($21 and tax and tip).More

I loved this British pub. I just wanted to sit in that atmosphere all day. Sadly, the food was just ok and in small portions for the price.

Lovely location and quite an idyllic little spot, however, the food here is rather bland and the service underwhelming. Popping into the restroom on the way out was no better either with the toilet paper onto it's last couple of sheets and the toilet seat...cover dispenser empty. Disappointing, all in all.More

This was our second visit to Pelican Inn. The first time was about three years ago and we loved everything about it so we made a special trip as we were kind of in the area. We couldn't have been more disappointed. We understood that...we would have to dine outside due to Covid. However, the restaurant had not made any real effort to adapt to current circumstances. They did not provide any outside table or chairs, other than three wooden benches so make sure that you bring a blanket or chairs to sit on. The gentleman who took our order at the window seemed rushed and was not friendly. When we got our food, the restaurant had "run out of plastic knives" and the waiter was not at all helpful and thought it was funny. The food was okay. There was a plastic table full of discarded take out boxes that did not appear to be cleared regularly. We just expected more from this pub. It is a beautiful location but the service leaves a lot to be desired. We will not hurry to return.More

Stopped at the Pelican Inn for lunch yesterday. We sat on the covered, ivy-lined patio on the back of the inn. It was an overcast day but seemed brighter on the patio. The food was good but predictable...fish 'n chips and French dip. The service...was very good--attentive without being overbearing. We didn't feel rushed and there was a steady change of clientele during the time we were there. That said, it also felt a bit tired and in need of some freshening. The dining rooms inside of the inn are very dark and filled with interesting artifacts from Old England. It seemed like the perfect place for a cozy candlelit dinner of Shepard's Pie or Bangers and Mash alongside a roaring fire. It is a good stopping point on the way to Muir Beach, Stinson Beach or Bolinas.More

An English pub with rooms upstairs on the windy roads leading up to Muir Beach. It will be hard to do better for a weekend retreat. There is walking, riding, biking and swimming in the area, all among the story-tale vistas of the Muir Beach...and Muir Woods National park area. Having had your morning or afternoon exercise, it is sheer delight to relax on the lawn of this charming cottage. Inside it feels comfortably authentic old English. Greeted by a charming and cheerful receptionist, we could choose between a pub (doesn't that sound more inviting than "bar"?), an intimate inside restaurant and a covered terrace. The friendly servers and the kitchen staff are all Latino's (sorry Donald) and the food, while simple, is excellent. Most dishes are English standard pub fare (think Shepherd's pie etc.) but with a distinctly international twist. The bread, procured from the nearby Zen Center, was the best we have had in any American restaurant. Our lunch stop at the Pelican crowned an altogether glorious day.More

Booked for lunch for my family on Christmas Eve and following decent service found a fly baked into my daughter’s sticky toffee pudding. When we told our server, he took it off the bill but proceeded to charge us for the remainder of our lunch...with no further acknowledgement. We asked if he told management to which he said yes. We asked if a manager was going to come by our table and he said the manager was working the bar and was too busy. He said I should call back if I wanted to talk to a manager. So we left. The floor manager, who either knew or hadn’t been told, wished us a good day.More

Under New Management....it needs to be. This place.is about as from a British pub physically as it is in terms of food quality and the service is rude arrogant and borderline aggressive. Fish and chips were merrr Dry fish and soggy batter. Muscles had more...closed than open and as for the guiness beef stew, laughable, didn't have any beef, sweet and floury soup is what it was. Waited 45 minutes to order this Crap at the bar too. I could live with poor food but the staff should never be allowed near paying customers. The place has huge potential, but for now it's just plain awfulMore
