I've been patronizing this establishment since 1975 when I first got certified as a scuba diver. I have seen this place go through many changes. By far it is my favorite Monterey restaurant with the best clam chowder in the world. Our waiter Iman was most helpful and VERY honest about specials, bargains, and dinner selections making our experience unique.

We had a family lunch before going to the aquarium. Our waiter was Terrific, but honestly felt the food was just average except.... Our daughter had a whole fish (rock fish of some type) and it was outstanding. The clam chowder is good, my coconut prawns were good but nothing good enough to go back. Good location on the wharf.... We went in for the clam chowder, it didn't disappoint. For lunch, we had salads and they were delicious. Our waitress was very professional and we will definitely eat there again if we're in the area.

We visit here every time we go to Monterey. Excellent food and elegant atmosphere, they even gave me a rose when we left. I recommend the halibut topped w/ prawns ,of course, the chowder.

We were wanting just Clam Chowder and Fish & Chips...and reviews brought us here. Yes, the Clam Chowder was so very good. Very tasty. That is the reason for the 4 stars. The fish was very bland. It had to be smothered with tartar sauce to give it flavor...didn't eat the fries as they were cold. We also ordered the... More

This is on Fisherman's Wharf, an area now known as a bastion of elegance and good taste, Old Fisherman's Grotto sounds as if it's stuck in the 30s and the staff hustling for business at the door does not bode well. If these things put you off don't let them, it's better than that. Once inside it's calm, quite clubby... More

Clam chowder, crab ravioli and seafood pasta were amazing! Really good service too! Would definitely come back there when visiting Monterey again.

Another restaurant that we just stumbled upon, on drive from SF to Pismo. Few minutes wait for table (lunch time). Husband had cup of clam chowder to start (it was a bowl full) & he loved it, very rich & creamy. We both had steak mains, rib eye for him, fillet mignon for me and they were so juicy, tender... We were there over labor day with some friends, they were not taking reservations and we were unable to get our group of 8 together so we split up. The guy's at a great table downstairs with a window the gals upstairs in a corner. This was not our choice, they were seated a short time before us, we were... More

They do not tell you on their website that they have walk in tables available even when reservations are filled. Resevations get you better seating. Also their most famous dish, cioppino, has two versions. dinner and lunch. Dinner has crab and lunch does not have crab. The price changes accordingly.
