I was a little hesitant to have date night at a deli, but this place was great! About 10 minutes from SDSU and the Cal Coast Credit Union Open Air Theater in case you need a bite before a concert. The matzo ball soup is...More

We visited this deli in San Diego with friends who lived in the area. With many delis going out of business, this one is thriving with an overwhelming number of menu choices. My wife and I shared the mishmash soup, a meal in itself, and...More

We had lunch at this out of the way deli with friends who live in the area. With other delis closing around the country (think Carnegie and Stage Door) in New York, this one is going strong with an overwhelming menu of comfort food. Delicious...More

We went here for breakfast and lunch while we stayed in San Diego. It seems a little pricey for sandwiches and soup, but they give you a lot of food and it is very good. They also have a $4.99 breakfast special which is good...More

To say that the food is delicious is an understatement. The portions are big and the prices are perfect. In addition everyone is super nice and friendly. There is a bakery with lots of yummy treats and the little gift shop has lots of unique...More

A usual, the food is delicious and the server is very attentive. My family still devoured their lox and bagel sandwiches, with a side of whitefish salad, but this year I enjoyed my greek omelette, The fruit on the side was a refreshing option since...More

The best delicatessen in San Diego County. Tremendous service always from my waitress Susie and Jen. I love the bacon mushroom and Jack cheese omelette, the Reuben sandwich, matzoh ball soup and the corn beef. Possibly the best coffee in town.

I found this place by chance in November 2017, have been going back ever since. Great food, pricey, but worth it. Staff are wonderful. Must if in the area. Recommend pastrami on onion roll. Bakery top notch!

Astoundingly full menu, but okay, I am confessing that the hot pickled tongue sandwich is my favorite. Ordering it might make your table partners blanch, but there it is. When it arrives, it just looks like a sandwich, a simply delicious sandwich. That said, there...More

Only a few classic Jewish Delis are left and this is one of them. The portions and prices are what you would expect. If we were in New York my rating would be one star less but we aren't. I've eaten hear a lot and...More

Sorry this took so long. Their portions are large. Dinner options might be a little more than $12-15. It will be worth it.

Description
Established in 1980 D. Z. Akin's has been a San Diego institution since they first opened their doors back in 1980 and is still a family run business spanning 3 generations. From the Menu: "D.Z. stands for the two of us, Debi and Zvika Akin. Having lived in Los Angeles, we frequented many good delicatessens and knew that San Diego was in need of one. Considering how we both enjoyed cooking, and how even our first date revolved around a bowl of chopped liver, we decided to pack our bags, move to San Diego and take a stab at cooking for starved delicatessen lovers. With only a small budget, good old-fashioned recipes, the courage to experiment, hard work and long hours, 'D.Z. Akin's' came to be. We made a commitment to ourselves that we would never compromise on quality and we would fill our plates high with the finest delicatessen available... With the help of wonderful customers and perseverance, we became, beyond our greatest expectations, a thriving business."
