Visited DZ Akins only yesterday after hearing and reading some glowing reviews and was so disappointed! The sandwich I ordered was so very dry and also extremely bland. There was no doubt the ingredients were fresh but my food suffered an extreme lack of flavour. Prices were very high and not a reflection of the food we go and therefor... More

Great food! Feels like I visited an authentic New York deli! The potato latkes were great and the beef dip was really good too. Can't wait to go back and try the Ruben. We took home a loaf of challah and walked out with an almond cookie...Yum!

Great food and plenty of it. Always clean. Atmosphere kind of basic---mostly booths in large open format.

Having unexpected time before a nearby Dr's appointment, I popped into DZ Akins for breakfast. It wasn't busy, the service was superb, and the food top notch. The waitress even recommended a special which saved me $3 from what I had planned to order -- and let me take half home for another morning!

The food here is absolutely fantastic. The service is fast. The breadth of the menu is impressive. Do not forget to check out the soups - they're exquisite. The mushroom barley is a personal favorite. Consider this place for breakfast or lunch or dinner before or after some hiking fun in Mission Trails, or before/after heading to Julian for some... Went here on a recommendation by an old friend to meet for breakfast and was not disappointed. Initially, I arrived first and sat in a chair by the front door. In just a few minutes of waiting, it seemed like at least 50 people entered in and were seated before my friend arrived. I will also say have patience when... More

There is something for everyone here and it's all good. Huge sandwiches. The best Matzoh ball soup. No wonder why the place is always s busy. Go here.

I really enjoyed the miso soup. Nice hearty meal reasonably priced. I would like to try the dessert next.

Every time I come here, the atmosphere is lively and controlled, it's like they have seating customers, the bakery/deli area, gift shop area and the dining room floor fully under control. You're never nagged and never forgotten for refills of coffee or water. The food is plentiful and always tasty! Parking can be a little tricky but its always worth... More

Established in 1980 D. Z. Akin's has been a San Diego institution since they first opened their doors back in 1980 and is still a family run business spanning 3 generations. From the Menu: "D.Z. stands for the two of us, Debi and Zvika Akin. Having lived in Los Angeles, we frequented many good delicatessens and knew that San Diego was in need of one. Considering how we both enjoyed cooking, and how even our first date revolved around a bowl of chopped liver, we decided to pack our bags, move to San Diego and take a stab at cooking for starved delicatessen lovers. With only a small budget, good old-fashioned recipes, the courage to experiment, hard work and long hours, 'D.Z. Akin's' came to be. We made a commitment to ourselves that we would never compromise on quality and we would fill our plates high with the finest delicatessen available... With the help of wonderful customers and perseverance, we became, beyond our greatest expectations, a thriving business."
