I used to come here in college many years ago and loved the quiet bistro atmosphere. Tonight happened to be in Berkeley and called to see if they had availability which they did! Had very good rustic leek and potato soup to start. I had steak au poivre and my son had pasta with mushrooms, green onions and feta. Generous... More

Le Gateau Ivre is an quiet, underappreciated gem in Berkeley. Cozy, comfortable atmosphere, friendly staff, excellent food, reasonable prices. Arlene runs the restaurant as a labor of love and it is reflected in the experience. Live entertainment on selected evenings.

This place "thinks" it is a French restaurant, but not only it is not serve French food, what it does serve is not good by any standard! A quick look at the menu shows how far it is from France. Serving Tapas for appetizer and gnocchi and lasagna for mains, maybe EU ?! The tapas are unrelated to any tapas... More

Quaint old world atmosphere. Food ok and reasonably priced. Quick friendly service. Had the quesadilla with melon. Would go back.

This Inviting French restaurant with a cottage like setting having several small areas for dining including a room with a fireplace and patio view has a restful and quiet area for dinning. The menu has tempting French dishes and there is a menu du jour which was even more tempting. We had a delicious ravioli with topping of asparagus and... More

This is a wonderful jewel box of a restaurant nestled within walking distance from the University. I have enjoyed every meal I have ever gotten here, from breakfast to coffee in the afternoon to a later dinner. Long live Le Bateau Ivre!

Le Bateau Ivre Back Room was perfect for the Rehearsal Dinner before our son's wedding. We loved the atmosphere - brick walls, candles and fire in fireplace on a chilly, rainy evening. Service was excellent. All enjoyed the dinners we had selected. Classical music and an unhurried evening. I especially appreciated the ease with which this dinner was arranged. I... More

I ordered the SUPREME DE VOLAILLE A LA CREME. The chicken was raw where I most defiantly would of gotten sick if I ate it. I cut it and could tell right away that it was still raw. Handed it right back to the server and stuck with sharing my husband's mushroom ravioli which wasn't that bad. Service was slow... More

We have been patronizing Le Bateau Ivre for years, so have a bit of difficulty understanding some of the poor reviews. I think that someone who is a foodie or is looking for a bar experience has the wrong expectations for what is basically a Berkeley coffee house that happens to provide well prepared, reasonably priced food & beverages (beer,... The restaurant is really neat. It's had the same owner for 46 years so she can tell you all kinds of stories about the evolution of Berkeley. The building has been there since the early 1900's she was showing me a photo of it from 1906 that a patron brought by for her. I was there as part of a... More
