Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Great spot for lunch and to watch the lads changing after surfing 🙊🤣 Soup was divine and the bread was unreal. BLT was lovely, bacon was cooked to perfection. The beetroot side salad was a nice touch, never had it before and it was lovely....The chips though were unreal, proper chips and the garlic mayo was excellent. Delighted they had room for us on a busy Friday afternoon.More

For a restaurant that prides itself on sourcing fresh local produce I am staggered to learn that the fish used in their "fish and chips" is 'River Cobbler' as it's called in Ireland. This fish is sold under many other names for example 'Panga' in...Spain, 'Basa' in UK. But it's real name is 'Vietnamese Pangasius' which is a species of catfish intensively farmed in some of the world's most polluted rivers across China and Vietnam. It's the very definition of 'not local fresh fish'. Our waitress seemed to take pride in telling us it was Cobbler' advertising it as a 'sustainable' but the reason to use this product is more about profit than any sustainability credentials claimed by their supplier. I cannot understand why you would not identify the fish used on the menu driving the need to enquire with the staff. You would not order 'meat and chips' and not identify the meat used so why is it acceptable to do so with fish? Always question an unnamed ingredient on a menu. As long as you avoid any unidentified fish on the menu you really can't go wrong. I recommend the Bakewell tarts accompanied with a late. You won't find 'fresh local fish' at Shell's and if that's what you want to eat then pay a visit to Beech Buns (only open a few days a week not 50m away from Shell's Cafe). Shell's Cafe should be avoided at weekends for anything other than takeaway as it's an unpleasant experience when over crowded with rude city folk pushing past you and also service suffers for the inconvenience. Lot of merchandise is over priced much like the dreadful 'modern art' on the wall also for sale at crazy prices! It's a lovely cafe but an unpleasant experience at peak times and prices are unreasonable.More

I climbed Knockarea with three friends on Thursday. Following this adventure we arrived at Shells for lunch and wow it didn't disappoint. Three of us had the vegan satay dish and the other person had a ham and chicken salad. Our meals were amazing, really...tasty and very nicely presented. The service was quick by cheerful, chatty staff. Overall, this place is fantastic and I will be back.More

This was my second visit to Shells. We arrived at noon and the waiter accommodated us with ordering from both the breakfast menu and lunch menu to suit everyone’s choices. The staff were very friendly and professional. I took the recommended fish and fried potatoes……...delicious. I loved all the little added details, fried capers, gremolata, beautifully presented and very generous portions. We also had very good coffee, went for a long walk and returned for tea a cake. I would highly recommend Shells, for either brunch or lunch. Our experience being made memorable by the very friendly staff…. especially the young chatty man from Tyrone !More

Having visited many times prior to this words fail me.Jacob, our host was excellent. Our food was not safe to eat,the chips were coloured but not cooked .....still hard .The "cobble" fish was raw and when returned the meal was returned unchanged ,yes fresh piece of...raw fish .Jacob did his best making us feel we would only cause him grief if we returned it again .I told the cashier when he asked "How was your meal?"I said "disgusting "He respond by charging me full price and then said "Are you being sarcastic?" I said no I'm being most sincere. I would not recommend this restaurant unfortunately anymore .€13.50 Cod prices for Cobble!!!!! I feel sick as did my son since .Bitterly bitterly disappointing. Haven been given the chance to redeem yourselves ,you failed miserably.I was very discreet in bringing this to your staff members attention and he was most appreciative of this .I left a tip as the waiter from Glencar who was lovely.More

Delicious tasty food. Very good quality. Poor choices for kids. The cheese toasty would choke an adult it's so dense. Also two of my children ordered soup and were brought full portions Eventhough I said kids soup. Apparently they only give a small soup if...you say mini soup. Soup was again delicious as was the bread. Just awkward serviceMore

I always inform staff unless asked first about allergies some restaurants & cafes are on it straight away no messing with Shells I found like they didn’t care not only did I inform the young lady before ordering & again after I’d ordered she completely...ignored what I’d said as if it didn’t matter when it’s a serious case (in my case it’s literally my life) you can’t afford for it not to but once that had been sorted food was absolutely fantastic, just a shame about customer service.More

Great food especially our favorite, the veggie burger with all the trimmings, it's always full. Parking has been reduced in Strandhill and the traffic congestion in Summer takes from being able to access the cafe. Be warned, if you have the burger, you just might...not have room for one of their lovely desserts! You have been warned!More
