We found El Sanjuanino while looking for a place to get locro (Argentine stew) in the summer, and we are happy we did. The staff was extremely friendly, and the food was very good and reasonably priced. Not being locals but living here for a time, we wanted to taste some food that was truly local, and this was it.... We went their as it was close to where we stayed and because it had good reviews. We ordered steaks, their stew (locro) and some empanadas. The stew was weird with bones in it and tasted like a cassoulet gone wrong, the empanadas were doughy for the meat ones and quite nice for the vegetarian ones. The steak was ok... More

We went here something to eat or our first evening in the city. After travelling overnight from UK and then up all day we wanted somewhere close to our hotel and something local to eat. Advised by our guide and this restaurant fitted all the requirements. Five minute walk from our hotel and the local delicacy - empanadas was order... More

Friendly service, accomodating folks but front rely on the menu. There is a section on "pasta" but only gnocci was available and we didn't find out until all the orders arrived. House Malbec was to-do. The empanadas were very tasty.

We had a fun lunch here. We were looking for a casual spot with a local flavor. The waiter obviously loves his job. He helped us order the right amount of food and steered us to some great dishes. They're known for their empanadas and it's easy to see why. A great sign is that a lot of locals were... More

We had lunch here and while the place is tourist central and the service a little hokey, the empanadas were tasty and we really enjoyed the fried provoleta (our guilty pleasure we discovered and ordered EVERYWHERE). We were staying nearby and just wanted a casual quick bite and this place was perfect.

Visited for dinner. Excellent empanadas and other local dishes. Portions are fair size. Staff does not speak English and you can only pay by cash.

I have been going to this place every time I visit buenos Aires. I can NOT go to Buenos Aires and not stopping by to have the best empanadas in town and a nice steak! This place is usually quite busy (you might have to wait to get a table) as it's relatively small but it's worth the wait!! GUARANTEED!... More

If you are in Recoleta and feel like eating (snack to full meal) this is the place to go. Friendly rapid service. I've eaten here twice - a take out lunch and sit down dinner. The empanadas are legendary and rightly so. A wide variety of flavours with my favourites being the spiced meat and the vegetarian. This is a... More

Staying in Recoleta

Neighbourhood Profile
Recoleta
Characterised by the French-style mansions which are the legacy of its aristocratic past, Recoleta is the true “Paris of the South.” Walking around this neighbourhood is an experience like no other in Buenos Aires: its streets are lined with elegant apartment buildings, exclusive boutiques, and former mansions turned into high-end hotels and embassies, which exude an alluring air of sophistication and class. You'll also find a rich cultural scene centred on the National Museum of Fine Arts, the National Library, and the Recoleta Cultural Center; as well as some great shopping spots, like the Buenos Aires Design Mall with an artists' fair set up in Plaza Francia every weekend.
