This is my second time to Shanghai and on my first trip I encountered a lot of challenging food options even at good restraints. Sichuan Citizen had great food that also allowed me to be a little adventurous as well! The Basil Drop cocktail was amazing and the entrees we great. The menu had pictures so it was easy to... More

During our recent visit to Shanghai one of our local friend invited for dinner here. We ordered for basil drop cocktail & beer. I learnt from my friend that "Basil Drop" is their signature cocktail & it was really nice. In food we ordered Kung Pao Chicken, Five flavour Mandarin Fish & Sizzling shrimp skews. Food was awesome.

The staff is friendly and can speak a little bit/more english - that make things easier. The dishes we ordered: Tasty chinese and fresh. Prices are okay for shanghai and absolutly worth the money. Drinks are very good - okay again: Yes the basil drop is a very good drink ;-), but other cocktails are also well done. A reservation... More

Definitely worth a trip. The caramelised black pepper beef and the ribs are incredible. Also the basil drop is one of the best cocktails in shanghai

We wandered in on a busy Friday night and the place was humming. It's got a lively, sort of retro feel. Good cocktails served withe efficiency and aplomb. The food was tasty and filling. I wish we'd discovered it earlier, as we were staying just up the road.

We've been here twice since we live in Shanghai, and twice we brought friends and family. You can eat authentic Sichuan food here, in a familiar, international setting. The staff is friendly, the menu is clear (with pictures) and the food is awesome. Salty and spicy as Sichuan food should be. We ordered more than we could finish, and paid... More

The food was just ok, actually very salty for my taste. They put too much msg but thats just almost every restaurant in Shanghai. However, their basil drop is too die for. Highly recommend basil drop to everyone. Its a must try!

Went here for a late lunch on a Monday. Food is pretty good but on the heavier side. Potstickers were good and able to order an imported beer from Seattle, Washington. Very clean and nice ambiance with red lanterns.

Staying in Former French Concession

Neighbourhood Profile
Former French Concession
While there are technical borders to the area formerly governed by the French in Shanghai, the "French Concession" of today is an amorphous neighborhood that is a favorite of the city's foreign residents. While it is mostly within the Xuhui district, residents will sometimes include parts of Jing'an and Luwan in their mental maps of the Former French Concession. The area seems frozen in time, characterized by quiet, tree-lined avenues, French-style villas, interesting boutiques, lively bars and quaint cafes that are not typical of China. All of these mix and mingle with local life as Chinese markets and lanehouse communities are peppered throughout. Denizens of the Former French Concession can spectate a mahjong game on the street or get their bike checked at a tiny bike repair store on the way to their refurbished apartment tucked away among Chinese family homes.
