It's hard to fault Madison - Chef Hu seems dedicated to giving his guests a treat, and a treat it is. However, it's a rare treat due to the price - it's not high if you compare it to a similarly-placed eatery in say Paris, London, Las Vegas or Barcelona, but it is more expensive than the typical Shanghai fare.... I lived in shanghai for 1 year. I gotta say, I LOVE Madison for serving the best eggs benedict that I have tried up to this day. I have been traveling around looking for different brunch place in every country I visited. So far, Madison has the best one! The eggs are cooked to perfection. The corned beef hash is... More

Nice place for we brunch. Wanted to go with my family but restaurant is CLOSED and looks like heavy work is done inside the building. Would have been nice to know ahead of time, when opening the "Madison" web site for example ...

We sampled loads of appetizers and salads over lunch time... All delicious. We all LOVED the charred broccolini salad. In fact I keep trying to recreate it. And the bone marrow and the roast tomato crostinis were also really fantastic. We also shared the meatball sub, Madison burger, and lamb rib. We basically licked the plates clean!! Highly recommend this... More

Finally got to try this place after one or two attempts when other things came up. I was disappointed with the menu mainly. Went their for brunch and you have to order lots of stuff to get a decent meal, nothing is really a full stand alone dish big enough on its own or small enough to not matter. If... More

Visited here recently and was disappointed overall, new location for them but was very cold atmosphere excepting the bar area which looked good. No napkins for dinner, and service very basic. Dinner was not bad but with so much just "off" we did not really enjoy the experience and to end it all they could not accept American Express which... More

I found Madison online while searching for a brunch place in Shanghai. The restaurant has been mentioned as one of the best places for brunch in town. The restaurant is nicely decorated and there is a good selection of food (American style brunch). I ordered the Pouched Egg and the cheese bread on the brunch menu. Although the dish looked... More

Simply put the menu looks fantastic and full of delightful experiences. The food came out all too salty. We ordered three courses and couldn't believe that the chef hadn't tasted the offerings. If they did they wouldn't have passed it. Brunch there is much better and service is better. I would recommend only brunch for this place. Room for improvement... More

I came for a friend's birthday celebration with a large group of friends -- dish after dish of brunch deliciousness! Someone described it as fancy comfort food. Right on! My favorite was the amazing hamburgers that taste like roast beef au jus sandwiches. Photo not included because after we started eating, it consumed my full attention... Come early to wait... More

We had a quick dinner on a Sunday late afternoon. Food selection was not great, but quality was okay. I heard they have good brunch, anyway we were not very impressed, but not disappointed either. Service was okay, given the usual discussions to get a good table instead of the first and worst one. Will not return, as there are... More

Madison restaurant was conceived with a very simple mantra in mind. Incredible New American cuisine coupled with pro-active sourcing, a diverse and dynamic wine list, and five star service without pretension.

Staying in Former French Concession

Neighbourhood Profile
Former French Concession
While there are technical borders to the area formerly governed by the French in Shanghai, the "French Concession" of today is an amorphous neighborhood that is a favorite of the city's foreign residents. While it is mostly within the Xuhui district, residents will sometimes include parts of Jing'an and Luwan in their mental maps of the Former French Concession. The area seems frozen in time, characterized by quiet, tree-lined avenues, French-style villas, interesting boutiques, lively bars and quaint cafes that are not typical of China. All of these mix and mingle with local life as Chinese markets and lanehouse communities are peppered throughout. Denizens of the Former French Concession can spectate a mahjong game on the street or get their bike checked at a tiny bike repair store on the way to their refurbished apartment tucked away among Chinese family homes.
