Charming family run small restaurant. Food was simply amazing. Had lunch here and then returned for dinner. Both times were invited to the kitchen to see how the food was being made. Traditional clay pots over a wood fire. Kotthu, rotti, rice and Curry all...amazing. Huge portions, all fresh and seasonal.More

Kenoli restaurant is by far the best restaurant we visited in Sri Lanka. Trip Advisor has an extremely limited scoring chart so other places that didn’t deserve a complete 5 rating unfortunately get that rating, however, Kenoli is one place that deserves MORE THAN 5...STARS. The restaurant is owned by a couple and is named after their 6 year old daughter Kenoli. The hut is cute and has enough tables to sit and enough fans to keep you cool during hot days. When you order food, you will have a short wait, but that’s because it is cooked fresh. So if you’re an impatient sort then please do not visit here and complain about a longer wait time. The two hosts are absolute sweethearts and just the most genuine people you could meet. The first day we arrived in Sirigya we were on the lookout for lunch and just happened to cross this hut and decided to walk in, and boy, were we glad we did. We loved the place so much we were back for dinner despite being at another place for drinks earlier that evening. We ordered a fish curry combo that came with 5 curries, rice papadam and the fish curry of course. The bowls may look small but once you get eating you realize the food served is more than enough. One fish curry combo fed both of us and then some. While waiting for food, the host, Varuni, asked us into the kitchen saying she wanted to show us how she makes the food and if we would like to learn the recipes too. This was such a lovely touch, we were floored by her politeness, friendliness and genuineness. We watched her flavor the fish and add a number of spices with her explaining them to us and headed back to wait at our table. The food was served neatly and the black wooden serving spoons were beautiful. Coming to the actual taste of the food, needless to say it was DELICIOUS. We were happy customers by the end of it and headed out for the rest of our day. Based on our experience at lunch, we were back for dinner. We ordered a similar dish, replacing the fish with chicken instead. This time Varuni’s husband (I can’t remember his name), Kenoli’s dad (for ease of understanding I will refer to him as KD (kenoli’s dad) through the rest of this review) was also there. We had a little chat before placing our order and he sat down near us while we waited for food. Like his wife, KD is a sweetheart and began conversing with us about a variety of subjects, from India to agriculture in Sri Lanka to politics to food and gave us a history of vegetables in Sri Lanka and where they came from and to his time working in hospitality in the Middle East. Our food came, we ate and still continued talking, it was way to engrossing to want to get up and leave and we had an absolutely wonderful time. The food as usual was delicious, the hosts were gracious as ever. The experience you are guaranteed to have at Kenoli is one to surely stay with you long after you’ve left the island country and are back to your daily routine wherever you are across the globe. Kenoli’s is a MUST VISIT!!!More
