It's a nice place for a drink or two but you can find far better quality and value for money food elsewhere. The restaurant itself is lovely but the service was painfully slow (even by SL standards).

We liked it so much here we went twice to sit on the balcony and soak up the atmosphere with good food, very friendly staff and beautiful surroundings in this lovely old building

Finding a restaurant that serves alcohol with food can be challenging in Kandy, so we opted for the Royal. A really vibrant and enjoyable pub like atmosphere in both the down stairs bar or the first storey balcony were the main impressions experienced during our dinner visit. The staff were very friendly and helpful and keen for us to enjoy... More

Can't comment on the food as we only went in for a drink. Great colonial place to sit and have a drink, it maybe more expensive than other places but so what your on holiday. Real feel of the past. Beautiful building with a courtyard in the centre, we sat upstairs over looking the street sipping gin and tonics. Bliss.... More

The Royal Bar is an excellent venue for food and drinks reminding me of Raffles in Singapore .. nice colonial building with courtyard to boot. The food was very good service was a little mixed but fine eventually. I imagine this to be at the higher end of Kandy restaurants but if your here a short time like we were... More

Food and drink are fine but the building and the staff are the highlights. Try to get to see the room with framed photos of the hotel in the colonial era on the ground floor.

excellent atmosphere in old colonial style. Upstairs for food probably best although we went 3 times and did both. The downstairs bar is great price and good beer and cocktails. Food good also but western style not really sri lankan.

This is a Government hotel so prices are a little more than privately run restaurants. The food is really good and everywhere is clean. Service is reasonable, not the friendliest place that we visited but it is quick and efficient

We've been here twice during our stay in Kandy. Really nice to have some beers. As already mentioned by others - just stay downstairs at the bar if you don't want to eat anything big anyways. In the upper floor it is more expensive and it seem to be only tourists upstairs.

The whole place is awesome, beautiful colonial building, immaculately presented. The bar and top terrace are open to the elements. Ambience is superb. After a drink we thought we would also eat here. Big mistake, we waited ages for the food and fish curry was more like pork. I actually thought that the chicken was tumbled or bleached. Cost of... More
