This place is hidden behind a hostel and is very expensive for Ecuador ($10 - $12 per entree) and not worth the high prices. The trout was over-cooked, and the spaghetti bolognese was literally a plate of cooked noodles with a tiny bit of sauce on top. I had to remove over half of the pasta before I mixed in... More

Loved the lasagna and fettuccine. Great food. I liked coming here because it is hard to find a good restaurant in certain parts of Ecuador.

Dined here twice during our stay in Otavalo First night we both had a chicken dish, the second night trout fillet and a pizza cooked in a wood fired oven. The pizza was excellent, the other dishes were good, although the baked potato which accompanied one of the meals was a little under done. We enjoyed the meals and the... More

We Love this Restaurant, and the Wonderful Welcoming Owners. We were very pleased with the New Menu Items, and our friends especially appreciated the Pork with Cranberry sauce. This is the best place for Pasta I have found in Northern Ecuador. This is one of our most loved places to eat in Ecuador, highly recommended, and wonderful as usual.

What a fantastic destination! We find this restaurant to be one of our favorites. Here you will find delicious soups, exceptional Italian style dishes like oven baked pasta with shrimp and spinach, and spaghetti with a wonderful pesto sauce. Good wine, specialty beers, and wood fired personal pizza. We live in Otavalo and visit Arbol de Montalvo all the time.... More

We went to this restaurant based on reviews from TripAdvisor and we were not disappointed. We were the only family in the restaurant on a Sunday (late) evening and were well taken care of by Adrianna. Adrianna was wonderful in helping us order with our limited Spanish. As a group of 2 adults and an 11 yr old girl, we... More

On the fancy end but if you want to treat yourself to something nice then this is a good place to go. Ask them to turn off the TV if it gets annoying.

Don't get me wrong, this is not a 5 star restaurant in New York City. However, the owners, a dutch couple, have put together an international menu that is most unusual to find in a small town in Ecuador. It also includes an old wood burning pizza oven that New Yorkers would appreciate for its thin crust pizzas.

The owners of this restaurant have made a wonderful place to enjoy a great dinner with offerings from the Horno (earthen fired oven) giving the dining room a warm inviting ambience. Highly recommended for great soups, salads, and other delicious entrees. Definitely a must visit while in Otavalo. They also have a wonderful boutique hotel with courtyard that we highly... More

We ate here twice when in Otavalo and thoroughly enjoyed the food both times, all different dishes. Service was good and staff friendly and attentive. Far more than a pizza place with all sorts of regional dishes.

A piece of history... When we, as new Dutch owners of Hostal Doña Esther, bought the place about 12 years ago, we didn't really have a restaurant in mind. We planned a small B&B, but the restaurant and kitchen were there, so we thought to give it a try. The only thing we knew then was that we liked good food - a lot! and the preparation of it. After finding a name - Arbol de Montalvo - we started to reorganize the restaurant, we made an almost completely new menu and started our adventure. Visiting the provincial shops and markets, we soon found the right places for meat, fish, vegetables, fruit and other ingredients, like herbs and spices. Besides that, after a while, we found the best people to prepare the recipes we thought of - dishes with a mixture of known local flavors (like avocado, corn, quinoa, chocolate) and new international flavors (moreover the herbs and spices we use and the imaginative combinations we sometimes make). With all this input for a good restaurant we soon found the right balance between savory and healthy food and we hope that the choice you make from our menu will stick as a lasting experience and - if possible - will bring you back to our restaurant in the future. Your food will be: prepared by: Lilian, Susana, Jenny & Freddy (pizzas) served by: Adriana & Lucy invented by: Arthur & Wendy
