The Alfai is a family owned restaurant, that specializes in Cod dishes, but they do offer other choices. The ambiance feels like a cozy New York Italian bistro, but with a Brazilian flair. The staff is very attentive and friendly. They have an excellent selection of wines, I chose Miolo Reserva, a Brazilian Merlot that was nice. As in all... More

The Scene: We came across Alfaia from its positive reviews on TripAdvisor and the fact that it was near our hotel in Copacabana. Positives: The food was very good, the bolinho de bacalhau being one of our firm favourites in Rio. The wine list was good and pretty reasonable - we had a Brazilian Riesling which was a pleasant surprise.... More

Went there for dinner in small unpretentious Portuguese restaurant that specialises in fish particularly cod. Had a lovely meal with sardines for starters , and a half portion of cod loin with broccoli and eggs and boiled potatoes which was ample for both of us accompanied by a green white wine castal Garcia ( I think ) which was carbonated... Excellent quality and reasonable prices at this traditional Portuguese restaurant hidden away on a side-street in Copacabana. We had an outstanding grilled ‘badejo’ fillet (whiting) for lunch there the other day, accompanied by a nicely chilled Casal Garcia white. Traditional ‘bolinha de bacalhau’ (small salt codfish balls) are also good. The restaurant can get a little crowded at lunch time... More

Portuguese restaurant specialising in Bacalhau dishes. The bacalhau balls and sardines were good starters, the main course was decent as well. Good place to try if you run out of more interesting ideas.

This is a small, quiet, very charming restaurant which is the paradise for those who like codfish. I do not like this fish very much, but I loved it here -- they cook it in a way that simply delighted me. Excellent wine, nice staff, excellent cooking: what can you ask more of a restaurant?

I decided on this restaurant based on the TA reviews and I was not disappointed. The waiter was friendly and helpful and when deciding on fish I went with his recommendation. I was blown away by it. Potato, onion, olives, parsley and probably a few other things with lots of strips of cod. Cooked as a stew type dish. When... More

Excellent restauraunt. The ambience and decoration remind a portuguese restaurant, very cozy. A little bit expensive, but it's worth every cent. The bolinho de bacalhau is a great choice as an appetizer and almost every dish are terrific. One of the best restaurants I've ever been.

Staying in Copacabana

Neighbourhood Profile
The rowdy Copacabana is one of the most traditional and old areas from Rio de Janeiro. This neighbourhood is a blend of Brazilian soul - crowded, rowdy and traditional. This neighbourhood has a bit of everything: bars with music, pubs, street fairs, chaotic streets, and many shops. All these things and more live side-by-side. There are options for all price points and tastes. However, the most powerful draw in Copacabana is still the fantastic view of the coast and the incredible beaches.
