People talk about this restaurant like it’s a special high brow treat. On a recent visit, I found the menu limited and the food edible, for sure, but nothing special. The service is phenomenal but the food is boring.

Sorry, but this place does not live up to its reputation. The Decour is drab with ugly wallpaper and fake plants. Some of the light fixtures look broken. Black plates in a dark room is no way to go. The red leather “couches” are torn...with stuffing escaping. Loud jazz is not conducive for dining-keep it downstairs in the lounge. My companion was embarrassed looking up the hostess’s miniskirt heading to our table. The wines by the glass pours are not even 3 ounces I’ll bet. The bone marrow appetizer is like a grilled cheese sandwich with anchovies. The duck breast has limp skin and a layer of fat that should have rendered out. The fresh pasta is too thick, rough textured, and pasty. The scallops are good but they are marred by inconsistent plating (some were upside down) and raw bitter (unwashed?) radicchio. The Affagato was soup. The portions are small, and we left hungry and disappointed (and $200 lighter). Either management or ownership is no longer paying attention or they do not know how to edit their menu and marry flavors rather than clash or subdue them.More

Lovely evening from start to finish. We were greeted with "Happy Anniversary," so the staff had clearly read out reservation. We did the 5 course tasting with wine pairings ($105, which was very reasonable under the circumstances). I found the vegetarian dishes to be superlative:...the cauliflower salad was the perfect winter salad, the "pastrami" beets were both creative and delicious -- it was like eating a pastrami sandwich but so light, and the risotto was very lemony and the rice was cooked perfectly. The duck was good but not as amazing as the other courses. The pistachio cake with the canelle of vanilla ice cream was a perfect, not-to-sweet, dessert. Wines were delicious and service was attentive but not obsequious.More

I prefer writing positive reviews. I really do. And Vermillion has delivered in the past, but not tonight. For dinner I ordered a hanger steak, with the substitution of a “normal” salad for kale, and pistachio cake for dessert. I ordered the steak medium rare,...and it came out slightly more rare than I prefer. A nod to French cooking? But, I could accommodate that. My problem was the steak was tough. It wasn’t a very good cut of beef. Maybe I just got a bad cow served to me, or maybe that I was tough because I was served my steak and salad in a soup bowl — I kid you not — which made cutting my steak with the serrated knife damn near impossible. When I asked my waiter — I sat at the bar — why my hangar steak was served in a bowl, when the gentleman next to me got his properly served on a plate, he responded “you’re lucky it wasn’t served in a mason jar.” I think he was sharing frustration that the kitchen didn’t have enough plates. If so, this problem should have been addressed a long time ago. The pistachio cake was incredible, repeat incredible! It was so good I’d eat the plate after it was washed. The desserts here are the best in the DC area and it saved an otherwise disappointing meal. Two stars for the entree...20 stars for the dessert!More

Called at 11AM for an impromptu Noon lunch date. Very clean and friendly establishment. Food was delicious and the staff was attentive. For appetizer, I had LIGHTLY CURED HAMACHI and my date had the PASTRAMI BEETS. Just light enough to prep you for the main...course. For the Entree, I had the CORNMEAL CRUSTED BLUE CATFISH and my friend had the BRAISED & GRILLED PORK CHEEK. I felt my fish was a little under spiced, but was cooked to perfection. My friend enjoyed the Pork, but commented about have to work it off later! This is an American Restaurant, so don't expect a lot in the area of flavor, but great atmosphere and ambiance.More

All of the food was out of this world - from the complementary amouz bouche & bread plate, to appetizers, hand made pasta, entrès & desserts. Staff was terrific, led by our server, Angie. She made great suggestions & was attentive without making us feel...rushed at all. This dining experience ranked right up there with some of the best we've ever had.More

This is a lovely restaurant with very good service. The menu was varied and had something very everyone. They have a large selection of vegetarian dishes. The daughter said her ricotta gnocchi with mushrooms was superb. The son said his tagliatelle with four meats was...the best restaurant meal he has had in the last 12 months. We would encourage you to review the menu before heading to the restaurant so you know what dining choices you will get. The local beer was also a winner. We didn't order dessert, we didn't have any room left to fit it in!More

Dining at Vermillion was a truly excellent experience. The atmosphere was very comfortable – casual versus formal/stuffy. And the staff could not have been warmer, more friendly, nor more helpful - from the hostess (Aicha) to our server (Skylar – I can’t rave enough about...her) and everyone “in between”. They were tremendous. And the food (Chef Tom) was the crowning achievement. His creativity was AMAZING!!! As an avid foodie, I love farm to table food and particularly tasting menus. Vermillion offers both – as well as a la carte. I did the tasting menu (paired with wines) and the tastes just “popped” – wonderful “explosions” in my mouth. I was stunned – and thrilled! My companions had the Stracciatella and Fall salads and loved them. One of my companions (a serious fish loving foodie) had the halibut…“Absolutely perfectly cooked with an incredibly fascinating and delicious combination of flavors.” My other companion said his scallops were “perfectly cooked and the best I have had”. And definitely order the Macaron Almond Tart for dessert!!! I simply cannot recommend this restaurants more highly!!! My profound compliments to the Chef and a “must do” for r any serious foodieMore

We used to come here often, but hadn’t in several years, probably about 6 and recently stopped in for happy hour on a Friday evening. We were lucky enough to score seats at the bar and chat with the bartenders and other fun guests while...drinking and noshing. We tried a few items from their HH drink menu… their seasonal punch wasn’t much of anything, didn’t taste much flavor nor any alcohol, just tasted the carbonate water splashed on top. HH wines were decent, especially for the price. Other cocktails were really nice, Brett does an amazing job making sitting at a bar a great experience! Food was decent… their tagliatelle was outstanding!! Flavors were fresh and amazing, just the portion was way too small for the HH price. Their burger tasted great, but was rather under-cooked… Wanted medium and got rare plus on half of the burger and the other half was medium rare (kind of odd it was cooked that way), but the flavors of the burger were outstanding! Spicy chicken sandwich was really tasty! Bread on it was too hard, but otherwise it was very nicely done. Overall, we’ll definitely be back, especially to sit & sip for happy hour!More

Sloppy service - Arrived at 1915 (with reservation) and it took 15 minutes to get three glasses of cava. Waiter apologizing for length of time it took which is nice but not my problem they don't have enough staff. Why can't the guy who brought...water when we sat down take a simple drink order? Food sub-par - Scallops with ox-tail were average. Nice crust on scallops but a bit underdone IMHO and the amount of ox-tail was very small (3 small bites). Bone marrow toast was ruined with too much other stuff (anchovy and gruyere....ughh). How about just some bone marrow on toast? Pasta dish was a lot of pasta and not much ragu. Affogato was ice cream in a half a cup of coffee instead of a shot of espresso. NOISY!!! The place was only half full and I had to yell across the table to communicate and hold my hand behind my ear to hear my wife across the table. Hardwood floors and no soft furnishings to absorb sound do not make for a pleasant dining experience. I I wasn't looking for fine dining (Michelin star) but I was not expecting a noisy bistro/bar. Wine (Barbera) from VA was nice. YMMV and lot of people seem to like it; just not me.More
