This is a western-style bar with a reasonably good drinks menu and whiskey specialization. However the main reason to come is for the jazz. The night we went they had an excellent 3 piece band and it is very close and personal. There is a 1000 Yen cover charge, but we got to hear two sets for that and it... More

I discovered this place with friends a few years back and every time I'm in Kyoto I make a point to visit. The ambience is amazing, the drinks are well priced, and the Jazz is phenomenal! Check it out, you'll be glad you did

Two stars are only for interior with lots of old vinyls and location in Gion.. We always love to seat on the bar and watch barmans when they enjoy their job, but this two guys behind the bar look like for the first time at work with any enthusiasm at all.. We order single malt whisky and ask for just... More

Visited tonight after recommended by a friend, was disappointed that the whole place was covered in smoke, don't visit if you are a non-smoker, it's just disgusting. Cover charge applies for certain nights.

Great little bar with nice cocktail list. The set up is beautiful with lots of wood. Nice intimate tables great booth or two, nice just to sit at the bar and watch the bar person at work. Good music, some on vinyl. Not super cheap but not overwhelming either. Loved it all!

We stumbled across this place on our first trip to Japan and came back this last trip because we enjoyed it so much the first time! This is a gem of a spot with great music and a fun atmosphere. Go for dinner before hand - so many choices in pontocho and then head in to Hello Dolly for a... More

Very old style bar trying to be a jazz bar. We were pushed to the bar end and told there was a music charge , Upon seating us the music stopped while we had our rubbishy glass of barely cool wine. We had to put ice cubes to soon down the wine and all in all a very dull place... More

Although our drinks were pricey (we had plum wine which was 75% ice) but I fell in love with the atmosphere. It is very close to Gion district right next to the Camo river (you can see the river from window)

Need I say more?!! We happened upon this place while walking around old Kyoto. We liked the look of the place. It is very small, but very nice, old-world ambience. The live jazz was very good, as was the service and the whiskey selection.

Worth popping in for a visit, good if you enjoy Whisky with a fairly good selection. Other cocktails were not as good, but still OK. Music selection was great, a lot of old LP's on the wall, you can request jazz artists or just sit back and enjoy the staff's selection. Live music fri and sat nights.

Thank Julian H

Staying in Pontocho

Neighbourhood Profile
Though small by comparison, Pontocho is one of Kyoto's most spirited and memorable neighborhoods. A narrow street straddling the Kamogawa River, it is Kyoto's busiest nightlife spot. When darkness falls, Pontocho's many signs and lanterns bolt to life, making the area glow with invitations to passers-by to come inside and pull up a chair. Its restaurants and bars sprawl onto the riverbank, providing a friendly atmosphere and delicious food. Verandas are always filled with people young and old crowding tables, biting into hot yakitori or sipping cold beers. It is a culinary heart of Kyoto as much as one of its most laid-back, clamorous, and entertaining evening hotspots. Pontocho has more of an amiable vibrancy to it than an elegant one, attracting newcomers, local veterans, and everyone in between, in casual attire like sneakers and jeans.
