Had dinner here recently. Small place, about 4 tables, 3 are for couples fourth is 4-person table. Also bar seating, about 10 people. Nice and cozy atmosphere. English menu. 2 courses with many dishes 5000 to 8000 yen or a la cart small dishes from 400 to 1200 yen. Food was well above average, a few dishes, such as the... More

An izakaya in a traditional Kyoto townhouse. They have a kitchen counter and some tables, and the place is rather lively but also a bit touristy (like many places in Gion). They have an English menu. I was seated at the counter, which is the best seat as a solo diner, and had a set course dinner with about 8... More

So guy goes in Japanese izakaya , orders chicken salad and wine and leaves one star review... As many reviewers here we got reservation here trough out hotel, Mume , when we asked for real not touristy Kyoto meal under Y5000 for two..."It's where we eat", hostess said, " and 5000 Yen should be fine, depends how much you drink":)... Great food. Easy English menu. The complaints on here are way off or they have never eaten in Japan before. We had the seasonal course. It took about one hour to get through everything and was very well paced and tasted great. Would recommend to anyone looking for a reasonable dinner in gion district.

We stayed at the Royal Park Hotel the Kyoto nearby and the hotel recommended we go here. It seems like nearby hotels have some sort of deal with the management. We were very underwhelmed- the wine was not good, the portions were very small, and nothing tasted good. The fried chicken was poor quality and flavorless. We ordered the pumpkin... More

It's a very cute and somewhat upscale izakaya with a nice, low-key vibe (and excellent fried chicken)!

A great Kyoto experience. The food was great although the service was a bit slow. We took our shoes off and sat upstairs. The best dish was the restaurant specialty - Japanese beef cutlet and lettuce rolled sushi. This was an amazing dish. It's quite large as well - could have been good for a meal.

Great small plates including stewed pumpkin, miso grilled cod, green tea rice with salted salmon, and more. In the historic Gion geisha district.

We seemed to be the only foreigners in the place which is set in the old town and is in a beautiful old building. Shoes off when we went in which is normal now to us so we had high expectations following a recommendation from the Hyatt. But the food was just disappointing. Portions here are small for a start.... Gion Manzara was recommended by our hotel (Hyatt) and we were pleased with the food and the service. Restaurant offers different styles of food prep. We ordered mostly teppanyaki and were very pleased. Also, they were able to accommodate my needs for gluten free

Staying in Gion

Neighbourhood Profile
Gion
Gion is Kyoto's famed Geisha District (called "Geiko" in Kyoto). Though Gion's many tea houses and entertainment restaurants are closed to foreigners, Geiko and Maiko in their traditional makeup with gilded hair in full kimono can be seen drifting the streets on their way to and from work, where they fan dance, sing, and play instruments for customers. Gion lights up at night, when the ancient-looking streets glow with lanterns along the river, where weeping willows catch the starlight and the air is warmed with conversation. Groups pass through to populate the restaurants and bars along the riverfront, but Gion still manages to be a mostly quiet district, due in large part to limited automotive traffic through many of its streets. Gion is a wonderful place to indulge in Kyoto's local and customary cuisines, and is best enjoyed after dark.
