Indeed the only place in Japan where I had a disappointing experience. The line was outrageously long, but it moved at a decent pace. The person in charge of managing it had a quite bossy attitude and was not that friendly. I went into the restaurant to ask whether I had to leave my name and party number somewhere and... More

I have read good comments about Chijiro on trip advisor so i came to this place for dinner. After waiting around 15m, we got a table. All the food war fresh, and the chef made sushi in front of u. We ordered one tuna gunkan, sashimi set, tempura, soup via ipad (english menu) and it was be served very quickly.... More

Its not fine dining or the heart of authentic Japanese cooking but when you're travelling not every meal can be this. If you're looking for a quick lunch with good quality food that's easy to order than this is a wonderful place. The sushi was tasty and easy to order because of the english language ipads at each table

I seriously cannot understand the fuss with this sushi restaurant. There is absolutely nothing special about this place I'm afraid to report, I'm just glad I booked in advance as I would hate to have waited like the others only to be served this very ordinary sushi which I could have got from a chain of sushi restaurants in Hong... This is a very limited menu but an easy place for tourists. They use iPads and ordering is very simple. The staff speak english and the sushi is good but not cheap. The seafood salad was very good. For this price we went to more elaborate places in Uji , Matsue and Osaka. Would I return - it is a... More

Good sushi. Fresh, tasty. Super friendly service. And you can order food by using a tablet. Pity the dishes in the menu and the ones in the conveyor belt were the same. I missed a bit more variety

Like many people mentioned, get the tuna here. At first I was very impressed by the price and quality of the sushi until I went to Nishiki Market. I would definitely make your way towards the market and get sushi from one of the fresh markets there instead. However if you are looking for more of a dining experience then... More

We were hunting for some sushi, and saw this place. We also realized that many others read TA too, as there was a long queue in front of us. I would count with about 50 mins wait during peak hours. Once inside, you have a conveyor belt magically bringing you pieces of sushi, of various forms and sizes. The plates... More

I came to this restaurants because of Good Trip Advisor reviews and I was not disappointed at all. Food is delicious and the Staff is incredibly friendly and warm welcoming to international guests. They have electronic english menus on Ipads which facilitates the orders. Prices are reasonable cheap. Definitely a good recommendation in Kyoto.

Staying in Pontocho

Neighbourhood Profile
Pontocho
Though small by comparison, Pontocho is one of Kyoto's most spirited and memorable neighborhoods. A narrow street straddling the Kamogawa River, it is Kyoto's busiest nightlife spot. When darkness falls, Pontocho's many signs and lanterns bolt to life, making the area glow with invitations to passers-by to come inside and pull up a chair. Its restaurants and bars sprawl onto the riverbank, providing a friendly atmosphere and delicious food. Verandas are always filled with people young and old crowding tables, biting into hot yakitori or sipping cold beers. It is a culinary heart of Kyoto as much as one of its most laid-back, clamorous, and entertaining evening hotspots. Pontocho has more of an amiable vibrancy to it than an elegant one, attracting newcomers, local veterans, and everyone in between, in casual attire like sneakers and jeans.
