Dined at this restaurant on my wife's B'Day. Scrumptious food and exemplary service. The host went a step ahead at served us complementary sweet dumplings whilst the whole restaurant sang Happy Birthday for my wife !! Try their cozy bar as well !! Thank you guys ...you made the day memorable & unforgettable for us. Arigatou ✍🏼💑

Located in a restored merchant's home, this restaurant is a nice setting. This is a fancier place and the prices are a little bit higher than most of the other dining we did in Kyoto. All of the food and drinks were really good. We really enjoyed the Peking duck, gyoza dumplings, and pork dishes. The crispy chicken was also... More

We were surprised at how much we enjoyed Zezekanpocchiri- excellent food, service, and atmosphere. Every dish was tasty, and the wait staff was amazing. The setting is in a restored merchant house and has a beautiful small courtyard garden. Just watch the low rafters if you are tall!

Chinese food in Kyoto has a nasty tendency to be bland and uninspired -- unless you're looking for quick-and-dirty gyoza and the like. This restaurant is quite another matter. Situated in a massive old merchant's house, lovingly restored, they serve a wide range of classical Mandarin cuisine with elegance and precision. The service is impeccable. I have not tested them... I have been in this place once, not going back for sure. Nice place, building, atmosphere but bad service and non vegetarian friendly. The place is very beautiful but the service, the attitude of some members of the staff is far away from what we know about the Japanese omotenashi, hospitality. Although I speak Japanese and had no problem communicating... More

Superb place, have à drink in The bar which is in the part of the house that used to be The storage for kimono fabrics. The bar man is funny and try his best to make your drink as it should be. The restaurant is brilliant, food perfect and the head waiter Roku is really something else he is a... More

This is a Chinese restaurant with very beautfiul atmosphere and very good service but the food quality is not in line with what you would expect from such a nice environment. When we have seen the full duck picture and ordered it later o we found out that it was only the SKIN of the duck without any meat attached... More

Zezekan is located in a house that once belonged to a wealthy merchant and was built around 1920. The interiors have been preserved and are quite remarkable in that the style is not quite traditional Japanese, but not anything else. The wood paneling and carving is quite opulent. Diners are scattered into several rooms and the general feeling is dark,... More

Staying in City Center

Neighbourhood Profile
City Center
No district of Kyoto is quite as representative of its blended nature as the City Center. By day, the covered shopping arcades along Kawaramachi and Shijo Street bring deal hunters and fashionistas out in droves to peruse the clothing, accessories, gifts, and home goods offerings. When it grows dark, the City Center is a hip spot for nightlife, alive with bars and clubs. A trendy culinary scene and an abundance of local watering holes give the Center its youthful vibrancy. In contrast, the quieter areas of the City Center seem a world away, shielded from noise by the foliage of the public gardens and zen spaces surrounding the area's shrines, castles, and the Imperial Palace. These ancient and sacred spots are seamlessly folded into the scenery, providing a respite from the energy of the city, but close enough to put you directly back onto the pulse of the city when you're ready.
