Me and my brother had the set menus, cooked on the hot plate in front of us. That included squid and sardines. The squid was on the hot plate for no time at all and was then served to us - it was cold and rubbery! The main was marinated chicken - again, was served to us still pink! We... More

My family of four found the whole experience underwhelming. It took about 2 hours sitting in an oily, smoky, sticky small room to have an overpriced set of very small portion "meals". My sons had two portions of the set meal of chicken pieces, two sardines and a few squid pieces with mixed veg. My wife had the two pieces... More

We sat at the counter for a stone grill meal and had a fantastic experience. The cook was very friendly and spoke english as an American (son of Americans but born in Japan). Kids loved it and so did we. Sake was smooth and his soy based house sauce was delicious.

We spied Issian while walking the streets around Pontocho Alley one night. We planned to eat dinner there the following night, but we could not remember the exact location. We walked up and down ALL the little streets and alleys until we finally found it. It was worth the effort! Ariel was super friendly, and all the food was incredible.... More

I'd actually give it 15. Excellent doesn't begin to describe the food, service or atmosphere of Ishiyski Isshan. The attentiveness of the staff is stellar. Ariel is a superstar who has a great story and is extremely helpful. Not only will he guide you through the menu and make food and drink pairing suggestions according to your tastes, he does... Visited here last night on the recommendation of our tour guide. Great atmosphere, attentive staff and lovely food. I showed Kelman, our server, my Japanese gluten free cards (you can download celiac cards in Japanese explaining what you can and cannot eat) He smiled and in a broad American accent said "we can deal with that". He went on to... More

It is a very good restaurant and the staff is really helpful. All three beef cuts are the best. Ask for the beef tongue. Chicken meatballs really good. Don't ask the Glass of beer, it's ridiculously small.

I went to this restaurant last night with my wonderful parents in law who are a bit anxious about trying new food. This place was perfect for us! They loved the grilled food and the waiter/chef who served us was lovely. We've already decided we most go back before we leave. :)

The food was excellent in this restaurant. There was a very friendly English speaking chef who made our meal enjoyable. We liked the open kitchen where the food is cooked in front of you on your table, but by the staff. Service was a little bit slow but you can forgive that for the food and friendly nature of the... Staying in Pontocho

Neighbourhood Profile
Pontocho
Though small by comparison, Pontocho is one of Kyoto's most spirited and memorable neighborhoods. A narrow street straddling the Kamogawa River, it is Kyoto's busiest nightlife spot. When darkness falls, Pontocho's many signs and lanterns bolt to life, making the area glow with invitations to passers-by to come inside and pull up a chair. Its restaurants and bars sprawl onto the riverbank, providing a friendly atmosphere and delicious food. Verandas are always filled with people young and old crowding tables, biting into hot yakitori or sipping cold beers. It is a culinary heart of Kyoto as much as one of its most laid-back, clamorous, and entertaining evening hotspots. Pontocho has more of an amiable vibrancy to it than an elegant one, attracting newcomers, local veterans, and everyone in between, in casual attire like sneakers and jeans.
