The setting of this restaurant is truly unique (right in the middle of the temple garden) and sitting on the traditional tatami mats may seem daunting at first, but it only adds to the experience, making it all the more memorable. We had the set...More

Visiting Tenryu ji temple during the red leaves period is really fantastic (though full of visitors). If you're interested to try the zen vegetarian meal inside this temple (very popular), please reserve the table in advance. It's simple but presented in different containers, very Japanese...More

You can make an online booking. It is located inside Tenryuji temple, the temple is less crowded than the other famous ones in Kyoto and offers nice area to walk including the bamboo garden. The restaurant is once in a lifetime experience. Shojin-ryori at is...More

Very clean and quiet place. 3000 Yen bought me more than enough and kept me full for a long time. Food was simple and mild and fulfilling. Nice zen dining experience.

For some reason, we expected the meal to be a bit more ceremonial with servers in kimonos, particular ways of serving the food or pouring the tea, and explanations of the food or the way it was made. It was not like that at all....More

The restaurant is located inside the grounds of Tenryu-ji Temple and is surrounded by Tenryu-ji's World Heritage gardens. Shigetsu is a great place to try traditional Japanese Buddhist cuisines, also known as shojin-ryori. This is a fully vegetarian restaurant. Very simple design. Good service. All...More

The restaurant is a base for spreading Zen Buddhism cuisine, "SHOJIN-RYORI" specialties. It is managed by Tenryu-ji Temple and all its employees are its faithful. The philosophy is realized with budget price and highest quality of cooking and service. The faith of Zen forbids its...More

The meal consists of many dishes (Kaiseki) made up of vegetables and tufu, served in a tradition Japanese dinning room (if one makes reservation). Some dishes taste very good due to the right mixing of different flavors. Overall is a good but not an excellent...More

Strongly recommend this place. We'd booked in advance and there was no capacity for walk-ins. It's inside the grounds of the temple and surprisingly tricky to track down. Once we arrived we were greeted by a helpful older woman who instructed us to pay in...More

Although we are not vegetarians, we thoroughly enjoyed the zen set lunch. Each dish has distinct flavours and is tasty in itself. We were lucky as there was no queue.

Western Kyoto is home to some of the city's best

Sorry this is probably too late now, but we got there at approx 1:55pm (paid the garden fee) without a reservation. We got to the restaurant at 2pm and were fine to order the set menu.

You can email to the restaurant itself and inform them about your dietary preferences and they will try to accommodate if possible.

Because we needed several seats I made the reservation on +81 75-882-9725 the day before. Before you can enter the restaurant you have to pay admission for the Tenryu-ji temple.
