Shigetsu is well known for its zen vegetarian meals. In its website it says the 2016 Michelin Guide for Osaka and Kyoto has designated Tenryu-ji's Shigetsu Zen Vegetarian Restaurant a "Bib Gourmand" -- a restaurant serving "exceptionally good food at moderate prices." We had a set lunch for about $30 which came with 5 dishes. It was enjoyable but in... More

We read about Buddhist or temple meals as we were preparing for our trip and this was a great place to give it a try! Right on our trail for the morning visiting temples in Arashiyama, we arrived around noon on a Saturday and were seated right away (though they did ask if we had a reservation). As others mention,... Tasty was so so. But the experience of traditional temple food was so impressible. And the location was so beautiful, in the garden of Denryuji.

This meal was delicious and lots of fun as we really didnt know what we were eating a good deal of the time. Didnt matter one whit as we exclaimed and conjectured through the whole process. We reserved for the $50 meal and so had a room to ourselves with garden on both sides of our room. As we were... More

Loved the simple yet fulfilling meal. Though only 5 side dishes with rice, soup and fruits, as you enjoy slowly, it's really filling. Would come again if I visit Tenryu-ji.

I love the tatami mats and the whole experience. The food was great, very tasty! So much of our Japanese meals were skimpy on vegetables so it was great to have a veggie meal. I thought it was a good deal for $30 for lunch, maybe just a tad expensive but considering the location and the view it was a... More

We made a reservation here under the recommendation of a friend who visited several years ago - we were not disappointed. We took a walk through the Bamboo Grove prior to entering Tenryuji - note you will need to pay the 500 Yen entrance fee in order to access the restaurant within the temple's grounds - it's worth it, Tenryuji... This was my second visit after 2 years. The food and the quality were still very impressive. The dishes are vegan but they are really delicious. The only downside is that it's located inside the Tenruji and we need to pay the entrance fee to get into the restaurant.Anyway, I will come back again whenever i visit Kyoto.

The restaurant is located inside the temple's area and is 100% vegan, which is in line with the monks' philosophy. Set up is traditional and simple. You are seated in a large room, on the floor, after having removed your shoes (so better be wearing socks when you visit). The food consists of a set menu of several traditional Japanese... More

Staying in Western Kyoto

Neighbourhood Profile
Western Kyoto
Western Kyoto is home to some of the city's best eccentricities. Kyoto's Saga-Toriimoto Preserved Street takes visitors back in time to the Meiji Period, where old homes have been transformed into tea houses and eateries. Pleasure boats drift down the riverbank, under wooden bridges that beckon nature lovers to hiking trails and botanical walks. The area's famously tall bamboo groves, monkey park, and impressive vistas during the Hanami cherry blossom viewing season mean that it is busiest in warmer months, though also gorgeous in the fall, when the mountains and hills along the banks turn multi-colored. Historic and engaging, even the rail cars in Western Kyoto seek to exemplify its traditional nature and scenic beauty. Many people, including natives, come to visit the 1,200 rakan statues at the Otagi Nenbutsuji Temple, which is still in use as a religious site.
